COMPARISON REPORT; CHRIS HADFIELD

AND WILLIAM SHATNER

By: Barua-Daniels,Martin

THESIS

A comparison on who had the greater impact on Canada.

CHRIS HADFIELD

Hadfield was born in Sarnia, Ontario. His parents are Roger and Eleanor Hadfield, who
live in Milton, Ontario. Hadfield was raised on a corn farm in southern Ontario and
became interested in flying at a young age and in being an astronaut at age nine when he
saw the Apollo 11 Moon landing on television. He is married to his high-school girlfriend
Helene, and they have three adult children: Kyle, Evan and Kristin Hadfield. Hadfield
used to be a ski instructor at Glen Eden Ski Area, before becoming a test pilot.

Hadfield is of northern English and southern Scottish descent. He is a devoted fan of

the Toronto Maple Leafs and wore a Leafs jersey under his spacesuit during his Soyuz
TMA-07M reentry in May 2013. After the 2012 NHL Lockout ended, Hadfield tweeted a
photo of himself holding a Maple Leafs logo, and stated he was "ready to cheer (his
team) on from orbit". He sang the Canadian National Anthem during the Toronto Maple
Leafs and Montreal Canadiens game on 18 January 2014.

WILLIAM SHATNER

Shatner was born on March 22, 1931, in the Notre-Dame-de-Grce neighbourhood

of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the son of Anne (ne Garmaise) and Joseph Shatner, a
clothing manufacturer. He has two sisters, Joy and Farla.

His paternal grandfather, Wolf Schattner, anglicized the family name to "Shatner". All of
Shatner's grandparents were Jewish immigrants (from Austria, Poland, Hungary,
and Ukraine);[ and he was raised in Conservative Judaism.

Shatner attended two schools in Notre-Dame-de-Grce, Willingdon Elementary

School and West Hill High School, as well as Baron Byng High School, and is an alumnus
of the Montreal Children's Theatre. He studied economics at the McGill
University Desautels Faculty of Management in Montreal, where he graduated with
a Bachelor of Commerce degree. In June 2011, McGill University awarded him an
honorary Doctorate of Letters.

CONCLUSION

I believe that Shatner had a greater impact in Canada not only because he is a multitalented and still very active and iconic man who never stops. For instance, in 2011 he
released his seventh musical album, Seeking Major Tom; but through research we also
learn that Shatner inspired Hadfield and many other astronauts around the world.
