Summary of Unit:
Lesson 1: Introduction of Lesson
Display on smart board image of art work. Christmas Village by Eric Dowdle and lead
discussion on what students see
-I chose this painting because it was a gingerbread village. I wanted to
show the students a painting that linked closely to what our lesson was
going to be.
Introduce topic of Goods and Service. How does it relate to picture?
Conduct Summative assessment using KWL chart to list what students already know
about Goods and Services
Introduce the difference between private goods and public goods
As a class create a list of public goods and services
*This list can be used to pick good/service for research project
-After the introduction of goods and services. Students will create a KWL
chart that will review what they remember learning about goods and
services from 1st and 2nd grade. The KWL chart will give me an idea how
much of what goods and services are needs to be reintroduced before
moving on to explaining what a public good/service is. Next, students will
create a list of public goods and services they know. Finally, the original
painting will be brought back up and students will be asked how this
painting could be used to represent public goods and services. Why might
the teacher have chosen this picture?
Complete the lesson with an introduction of the lessons that will take place over the next
three days.
Lesson 2: Research Individual Goods and Services
Discuss Project and Preview Resources the students will use
Select a Goods/Service from jar
Students will research their goods/service and write 1 paragraph
Explain what they selected.
Is it a good or a service?
Why do they think it is a good or a service?
Why is their good or service important for the community?
Use book about Firefighters as example of what is expected of the students
Lesson 3: Creating Gingerbread Town
Students will be given an example of the gingerbread house and gingerbread they are
going to be creating.

Students will complete their paragraphs if they are not finished before beginning their art
project.
Students will be provided with cardboard templates of a gingerbread house and a
gingerbread man and given access to various art supplies to design and decorate
based on their good or service.
Lesson 4: Presenting Town Projects/Closing the Lesson
Each student will present their research and art project.
The class will complete the KWL chart.
The students will be asked what private good/service they think should be made a public
good/service. Students will be expected to explain why they think the
good/service should be made public. Further discussion will occur concerning
what a community can do to advocate for change. (Could segue into another
lesson plan)
