Engaging students in math instruction is crucial to their understanding and confidence. One way I have been
successful with student engagement with through math games. Students practice their basic facts which
builds the fluency and leads to higher confidence when solving higher order multiplication problems. These
activities require students to work with a partner. This promotes their social interaction during the school day.
This is a time in the day when the students can work cooperatively and have a small conversation. Students
need this time throughout the school day and it encourages them to build their math skills.

Reflection on artifact:
The students greatly enjoy the times they get to do these activities. I do have a few games that can be done
independently as well. There are times when a student prefers to work alone and instead of practicing
flashcards, they still have the option to play a game. Some students are not comfortable working with a
partner if they dont have confidence in their skills. Allowing them the chance to work alone and build the
confidence tends to lead to the students working with a partner at a future point.
I have had some struggles with students using the time to simply have a conversation. The students become
distracted and forget about the game and want to talk with their partner or other students nearby. I have
found that if I am mobile through the room this is less likely to happen. I encourage all students to show
Bondurants BEST and continue working hard to improve their math abilities.
