Sight Reading Introduction

Anticipated Grade Level: Middle School.


SATB; 6-7th Grade

Overview

Materials

In this lesson, we will introduce sight reading excerpts, review


healthy soft pallet positioning, and continue with the sequencing
of warm ups and physical movements that take place in the
Goodnight Middle School choir room.

Objectives

Objectives Met

Students will be able to do the following:


Visually identify and sing targeted intervals
Identify and sing targeted vowels
Identify solfege from a sight reading excerpt
Sing solfege from a sight reading excerpt

Procedure
The lesson will first begin with the following warm ups:
1. Students will pick up warm up, and answer in complete
sentence.
2. T will review answers, when complete.
3. After review, students will put away warm up in folders,
and assume position one.
4. Review Target Position: Soft Pallet Raised
Following the worksheet, the sequenced warm ups and
physical activities will include:
1. Forbidden Pattern (SFM), in which T will solfege and model
a variety of solfege intervals, and students will correctly
model back with the exception of the established forbidden
pattern.
2. Follow the Hand, in which the key will be established, and T
will sign solfege, and S will sing and sign the appropriate
pitch and hand sign.
3. Straight Forward Scale (DRMFSLTD TLSFMRD)
4. Gimme One: an established physical rhythmic pattern that
includes clapping and beating patterns on legs.
5. Chicken: shaking all apendages in beats of 8, 6, 4,2, then
1.
The Sight Reading Excerpt will be introduced in the following ways
1. T will project excerpt exercises on Elmo
2. Review first rule of Do: It can be anywhere
3. Establish where Do is.
4. While pointing to each note, and reinforcing rhythm, ask S
to sign the solfege.
5. When evaluating each Ss solfege, reinforcement will occur
when students then are asked to speak the solfege.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for every note in the exercise.
7. When done, give pitch for Do. Ask S to audiate.
8. Review definition of Audiation.
9. Audiate excerpt.
10. Then, S will sing excerpt.
11. Extension Activity.
12. If time allows, follow steps 2-11 with Exercises 2-4.

Extension Activity
Have veteran students define and articulate difference between
tempo and rhythm, label rhythmic values in excerpt, and note
values of each note in excerpt.
