I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
To review fractions and division in a creative way.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
The unit is based on the Grand Rapids community and how every subject area can be connected to the community. The math portion
will relate to this unit because we are looking at Art Prize, which is located downtown Grand Rapids. The numbers of how many
artists, venues, works of art, etc. will be given on the assignment for the students to use within their math problems. At the end of the
assignment they will make their own piece of art.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to applicable national or state standards.
If an objective applies to only certain students write the name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
1) Review fractions.
2) Review division.
3) Incorporate the Grand Rapids community, as well as art, to make the lesson cross-curricular.

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher activities and student
activities
Today we are going on a field trip to Art Prize where we will see how art creates community within Grand
Rapids. Tomorrow we will be reviewing our division and fraction skills and create artwork of our own.

After viewing different pieces of art we will look at the statistics (how many people voted, how many art
pieces were there, etc.) and review how to do fractions and long division.

For every problem the student gets correct they will receive the name of a 2D shape that they must
incorporate into a drawing. After creating their own picture they can color it in and make their own piece
of artwork. Once everyone is done with their art piece, we will hang them up and have our own
community of art.

Relatable to All Grades:

This lesson plan can be related to any grade by changing the type of math problems used. For instance,
kindergarten through second grade should use addition and subtraction problems, whereas sixth through
eighth graders should use algebraic problems as well as percentages. In terms of the art aspect, K-2nd
should be given pre-cut shapes to make a picture out of, 3rd-5th should be told what 2D shapes they need
to use in a drawing, and 6th-8th should be told what 3D shapes they need to incorporate in their drawing.
