Lesson 1Integration: During the week I will read the book Three Billy
Goats Gruff 3-4 times focusing on a new story element each time
we read the story. The first lesson we will focus on recognizing the
characters and the setting of the story. Throughout the week we
will be discovering new science concepts by investigating and
conducting research on different types of goats. We will end the
week by doing a field trip to a local goat farm.
Essential Question(s): The children are asked who the main
characters in the story are. What does the word setting mean? What
is the setting of the story? What does plot of the story mean? What
is the correct sequence in this story? What comes first, second and
third? What are Trolls? What do they look like? What do they do in
the story?
Objective: After completing this lesson the students will be able to
determine who the main characters are in the story, what the setting
of the story is and the plot. They will learn the definitions of 4 new
vocabulary words.
Standard(s): The standards covered in this lesson are LA 2.1.6 on
Comprehension: Students will construct meaning by using prior
knowledge and text information while reading grade level literary
and informational text. We also cover LA 2.1.6.b which includes
identifying elements of literary text such as characters, setting and
plot.

Motivation: The first reading of the story the Three Billy Goats
Gruff story will be read by me so the students can gain a better
understanding of the story to determine the characters, setting and
plot. I will use puppets during the story to make it more exciting
for my students. Before I read the story to my students I will ask
them to listen for the answers to the essential questions we
discussed earlier.

Body of Lesson:
After reading the story the Three Billy Goats Gruff story in class
the students will make an anchor chart to determine the characters,
setting and plot of the story. The worksheet given to the students
will help them determine who the characters in the story are, the
setting and the plot.
The students will learn the meaning of the targeted vocabulary
words for this lesson.
At the end of the lesson the students will make puppets to be able
to retell the story through with their puppets. They usually act out
this story many times during the day.
Evaluation of Lesson: I will evaluate this lesson by making the
anchor chart with my students and by watching my students act out
their stories with the puppets they made in class.

The students will write down their new vocabulary words and their
meanings they learned in class in their journals.
I did this actual lesson in my summer class and the children loved
these activities. They acted out the story with their homemade
puppets and my puppets throughout the entire week. Later in the
summer they asked for this story again.

Adaptations for special needs child:

Adaptations can be made for special needs students if needed by
working with a buddy to make their puppets and to cut out their
worksheets. They can hold a puppet while the story is being read to
keep their attention on the story being read. If the student needs
adaptive scissors to cut their puppets out if they want to cut them
on their own. I often give the student their own book to look at
while I read and that helps the child stay focused on the story
better.

I currently use special equipment in my preschool class such as

bumpy chairs, cube chairs, rocking chairs, weighted animals for
their laps and weighted vests if they are needed.
Adaptations for ESL/ELL child: I really like this book because it is
in English and Spanish so I can pick up key words to use with
students that speak Spanish. I am not fluent in Spanish but I have
access to many teachers that can assist me in key words to use in
my class.
