Tiger P.R.I.D.E (physical education, recreation, inclusion, development and enjoyment)

is an internship created by the Health Exercise and Sport Pedagogy Department in order to
develop the skills of undergraduate students in engaginginimprovingtheirteachingpracticesto
better prepare themselves to become professional educators. As part of the Evaluation Team
(ET) my job helps in aiding my Delivery Team (DT) improve their teaching skills through
producing reflective and analytical evaluationsthroughoutthesemesterinternship.Utilizingpast
systematic observations that I have observed from this internship program I will evaluate the
pedagogical skill development of my DT Lauren Nakaso. Lauren Nakaso is an undergraduate
student that showed an interest and drive to improve her skills as an instructor through Tiger
Pride in Cleveland Elementary. Throughout the semester Lauren instructed twenty students that
were in the grade level range of 4th and 5th grade. Throughout this opportunity Lauren taught
her students various skills through the 8 week program which included: basketball, dance,
soccer, baseball, badminton, frisbee, hula hoop, and additional activities. In order to evaluate
Lauren Nakaso skill development throughout the semester this paper will focus on just three
systematic observations that were recorded based on my DTs performance which include:
System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time (SOFIT), Time Analysis (TA), Idiosyncrasies
(Idio.).

In using the
System for observing Fitness Instruction Time
( SOFIT) to observe the
amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) of Laurens students throughout the
semester was a gradual process. At the start of the program Laurens students completed 20
minutes of MVPA, than begantoincreasethefollowingweek(figure1).However,itdiddecline
on week 5 to 19 minutes of MVPA (figure 1). In addition, in the next following weeks the
MVPA began to steady at a 2023 minute midpointthroughouttheprogram(Figure1).Overthe
course of the semester Lauren did improve on her MVPA with her students. She utilized the
suggestions given to her to involve the students in the instruction process of learning new skill
movements.Laurenalsohadstudentsafteractivitieshelpinplacingthesportingequipmentaway
which helped in increasing MVPA. Additional strategies that could have been used to increase
MVPA in students is having a warm up stretch before instant activity to get them ready for the
lesson. Instruction time can be shortened or combined with the warm up. In having students
participate in the instruction process by performing the skill in a step by step process can help
themremembertheskillatahigherratethanlisteningforaprolongedtime.

Inusing
TimeAnalysis(TA)toobservethelessonstaughtbyLaurenthroughouttheTiger
Pride Program. Time Analysis is often used as a way to assessaninstructorstimemanagement
skills when instructing a class. It is also very helpful in understanding where the main focus
should be in a lesson in creating an active class. As shown in
Figure 2Laurenseemedtofocus
her attention on instruction more so than activities. Using feedback given through Tiger Pride
she incorporated students into her instruction in performing the skills they will learn during the
lesson as a way to increase active movement. In creating this change in her lesson there was
much more of an increase in activity during week 7 and week 8 (figure 2). Also, as mentioned
above in having students perform the skills along with the instructor, has helped students in
increasingtheircognitivememoryoftheskillstaughtinclass.

Lastly,
Idiosyncrasies (Idio.)
were also used to observe Laurens skills throughout the
semester.Idiosyncrasies areoftenusedtoanalyzespeechorwords that areusedofteninalesson.

Laurens improvement. As shown in
figure 3 Lauren did use um/uh, ok, you guys a few times
during the first week (figure 3). But over the course of the semester she was verycarefulofher
words and even used new reinforcement words to better praise her students. Though it was not
tallied perfect was often a word used often. She used it less often towards the end of Tiger
Pride. It is important to use words that are reinforcing and positive/constructive to students

constructive feedback to improve her students skills during the activities. There was never a
