Poaching Deer
Will these people ever get caught doing things that only illegal hunters do? DNR has
made a new law on poaching deer. The base fine is $1000 for any deer killed, if the deer is an 810 point the fine increases $500 per point but if the deer has 11 or more points its $750 for each
point. In the Carolinas the DNR are starting to use robotic deer to act like bucks and does.
Nobody knows why hunters like to poach deer but they do. Citizens usually get caught in the
end. D.N.R are trying to stop the problem in the woods but it will always be a problem.
Over the year poaching has been a really big problem. People do not understand that
there are not really a lot of deer after the season is over with and they need time regroup. People
also do not understand how much trouble you can get in. In the article two charged with
poaching deer in Vermont these two guys at the age of 37 and 22 was face with losing their right
to hunt in Vermont 43 other states for three year (Price and McCombs 1). DNR did not just stop
they were also face with 60 days in jail with a minimum fine of $400 and an additional $2,000
fine for each illegally killed animal (Price and McCombs 1). DNR is training to stop poaching by
doing stake outs to watch people.
However people do not poach just for meat or money. Today the illegal hunters hunt for
antlers. Hunters do this so they can brag to someone about killing a big deer. When you harvest a

big buck it is supposed to be because you have good skills but when you have to hunt out of
season they call that cheating (Galea 2). Television shows only show the hunters hunting big
bucks and that contributes people to be like them (Galea 3). The people who poach do not have
enough respect for the animal. Deer have a season when they mate and have babies and people
are killing deer during this time. While people poach they are killing the population on other deer
if they kill a doe with fawns then the fawns are likely to die as well.
Four men from Indiana were arrested for poaching deer. The Illinois Conservation Police
says the men purchased a small plot of land in rural Pembroke Township, in Kankakee County
but were poaching on neighboring property (McCombs 1). The men were baiting the deer and in
some states thats illegal.
