Lesson Set 1: Interactive Read Aloud
September 24, 2015
Grade: 5th
Subject/Topic/Activity: Frindle
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.1
Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Objectives:
Students will strengthen their vocabulary and word reference
skills by using dictionaries, exploring word origins, and using
their own creativity to come up with new words.
Procedure:
Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will give the class a simple oral direction but they
will use a made-up word. For example, Can I please have
everyone take out their eldnirf and open up to your response
from yesterday. (The teacher is referring to the students
writers notebooks, but they are using a made-up word to help
introduce the concept in the book Frindle. The teacher will once
again tell the class, Can I please have everyone take out their
eldnirf and open up to your response from yesterday. The
teacher should use hand gestures and repeat the sentence
multiple times until almost everyone in the class understands
that the made-up word eldnirf represents the students writers
notebooks.
The teacher will now discuss the students reactions to the
teacher throwing a nonsense word at the students. The teacher
will begin to have an interactive discussion with the students by
asking them open-ended questions as a group that they will
verbally respond to.
What was your first initial reaction when I asked you to take out
your eldnirf?
How did you figure out what I was talking about?
What different clues did you use to help you understand and
figure out what I was talking about?
What does eldnirf mean?

After the interactive discussion, the teacher will then begin to

introduce the book Frindle. The teacher will explain that in
Frindle, the main character, learns about the origins of words and
decides to create a new word for pen.
The teacher will then ask another interactive question, What
problems might this cause and why?
The class will then discuss the problems that this situation could
bring about.
Assessment:
The teacher will use observation-based assessment in order to
assess whether the students are grasping the objective. The
open-ended questions will give the teacher a good idea of
whether or not the students understand.
