Math Lesson
Grade: 1st
Subject/Topic/Activity: Measuring Objects Around The Room With
Tiles
Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.2: Express the length of an
object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple
copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end;
understand that the length measurement of an object is the
number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or
overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is
spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or
overlaps.
Objectives: Students will be able to use tiles to measure different
objects around the classroom.
Procedure:
1. The teacher will gather the students on the rug to begin the
math lesson.
2. Boys and girls, do you remember the activity you did last
Thursday when you were using tiles to measure different fish?
Well, today during math, we are going to be using those same
tiles to measure different objects around the room. You need to
make sure that you are being respectful and polite. This is a fun
activity and you are going to be allowed to walk around the
room, but if it gets to crazy then we will stop and do something
else that isnt as fun.
3. The teacher will then show the students the worksheet. On this
side of the chart you will see a list of objects. You are going to
need to find the object around the room and then use your tiles
to measure it. Once you have the object measured out, you will
need to count the number of tiles that it took to measure the
object and record it on the other side of the chart.
4. The teacher will emphasize that the students will need to be on
good behavior. If they are not behaving properly, then the
activity will be stopped and the students will lose privileges of
having the freedom to work freely around the room.
5. When I call your name you can come up and grab a worksheet
and a handful of tiles. If you need to get more tiles while you are
working, then leave your work and come up and get more. That
means that other students that are measuring and working
around you need to be extra careful. Think about if someone

stepped on or messed up your measuring work when you were

almost done. So boys and girls when you are walking around the
room you need to be extra careful and respectful of your
classmates work.
6. The teacher will have the students get their material one at a
time and then begin to work.
7. The teacher will monitor the students as they work around the
room.
8. Boys and girls, as you are finishing up your measuring I want
you to come back and sit on the rug so that we can compare
answers.
9. As the students finish their work, the teacher will gather
everyone on the back rug as a group.
10.
The teacher will write the object up on the board and then
take a couple of answers from the group.
11.
The teacher will then measure the object in front of the
class so that everyone can see the correct answer.
Assessment:
The teacher will assess students understanding by asking
questions and by observing students performance throughout
the lesson. The students will also be evaluated on the completion
and accuracy of their worksheets and their participation during
the discussion and activity.
