ELD 376
Science Lesson Plan 1
September 25, 2015
1) Big Idea: Students will obtain an understanding of molecules and
atoms through hands on experiments as well as constructing
their own models to understand the different parts of molecules
and atoms.
2) Graphic organizer attached on back
3) Learning objectives:
a. The students will gain a complete understanding about the different parts
of the atom and molecules and be able to label each different part.
b. The student will be able to use inquiry based learning to gain an
understanding of the concepts of molecules and atoms.
c. The student will do hands on activities to help them obtain the basic
knowledge that they need in order to understand molecules and atoms.
These activities would include:
o Using paper plates and fruit loops to model and label the
different parts of an atom
o Using bake able dough, with different colors used to represent
protons, electrons and neutrons, connecting each part with
toothpicks to create models that can be displayed around the
classroom
o Creating models with pipe cleaners and pom-poms
o Having kids become the atom by having students hold up
large signs with + and and have the students group together
to form different atoms
o Showing students a visual model of an atom on the smart board
and having them copy down the model by drawing and labeling
the different parts
o Creating a model of an atom using wire and Styrofoam balls
o Using different colored Legos to create models of atoms and
molecules
d. The student will obtain knowledge about the different atoms on the
periodic table through hands on experience by creating models with the
different elements on the table.
e. The students will learn about molecules and atoms by watching different
video clips
4) Brainstormed list of assessment
The main form of assessment would be through teacher
observation. The teacher will be able to walk around and provide

feedback to students as they are creating their models.

The teacher will show the students video clips, and follow up the
clip with a series of basic questions that the class will answer as a
group. The teacher will be able to assess students by how well they
answer the questions given.
The teacher will have students create graphic organizers to express
their knowledge about molecules and atoms.
The teacher will engage the students in group discussions to create
KWL charts. Before the lesson, the students will complete what
they know and what they want to know, and after finishing the
lesson they will complete the section about what they learned. The
teacher will look at the students charts and assess what they
learned from the lesson.
