Title: Refraction
Essential Question: What is refraction?
Standards: 5.2.6.C.1 Light can be absorbed, redirected, bounced back
or allowed to pass through. The path of reflected or refracted light can
be predicted.
2-PS1-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify
different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
Learning Objectives:
Assessments:
Materials:
Cups
Plastic Spoon
Glass Marble
CD
activity sheet
Posterboard
science journal
Prior Knowledge: Students know that light behaves in different ways
and one of those behaviors is reflection.
Lesson Beginning: The teacher will explain that light behaves in
different ways. The students previously learned about reflection, and
know the teacher will introduce the idea of refraction. The teacher will
provide examples for refraction. The teacher will use the analogy of a
person running through a field for reflection, and a person running
through mud for refraction.
Instructional Plan: Students will be split into four groups and each
group will be given materials that they have to categorize as either
being reflective or refractive. The students will be given an activity
sheet to record their findings. For reflection: glass of water, mirror, cd-shiny objects. For refraction: plastic spoon, glass marble, pencil in
