VPA Reflection
After reading from the visual performing arts framework, I need to know about the
standards in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts to teach visual and performing arts in
elementary classroom. I also need to know that students need to reach the five strands of content
standards: artistic perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, aesthetic
valuing, and connections, relationships, and applications. Moreover, I need to be aware that
kindergarten to eighth grade are essential in preparing students for beginning-level high school
art courses in which they engage in more focused and independent work. I need to know that in
theatre, students learn the difference between an actor portraying an imaginary character and a
real person.
My KIN 447 and THE 337 class have helped me prepare to implement fun activities in
my future classroom. My Kin 447 which is dance in the elementary school, has prepared me in
how to write an objective and create a lesson plan. I have learned a lot of fun, dance movements
that can be done with the students. I have the opportunity to learn about different strategies in
how to teach different grade level classrooms. My The 337 which is creative dramatics class, has
prepared me to also write a lesson plan but most importantly how to implement creative drama in
the academic subjects. I have learned that implementing language arts, math, history and science
through creative drama can definitely be enjoyable for a student to learn more.
I feel well prepared for kinder through fifth grade. I feel prepared when students learn
about many ways to move through space and respond to their teachers instructions to hop, turn,
wiggle, or be still. I feel less prepared in music because I do not play an instrument but I do

know a little bit of rhythm. I will just have keep on improving in this area.
The artifacts that I will be using for my portfolio will be my philosophy statement from
Kin 447 class. For my The 337 class I will use one of my lesson plans I had to present on.
The work samples demonstrate my knowledge and learning in visual and performing arts
by learning how to create lesson plans and also conduct a lesson. My philosophy statement for
Kin 447 will demonstrate my knowledge by stating my beliefs in education and visual and
performing arts. The work samples relate to my personal experiences because I remember when I
was in elementary school, I enjoyed my visual and performing arts classes and my teachers were
so energetic and made the class fun. Therefore, I will also show enthusiasm to my future students
because I want them to enjoy visual and performing arts like I did when I was in elementary.
