Target Competencies Make decisions based on ethical and moral responsibilities. Directions Write a response to the given ethical situations, include the scoring guide criteria. Use Tymchuks Seven Steps for Making Ethical Decisions. 1. Describe the parameters of the situation. The parameter in the situation is the sub is treating the children different that are Hispanic and Marci is not comfortable with the sub teaching the class. 2. Describe the potential issues involved. The children could start acting out from getting treated different, Marci could lash out on the Sub if he gets worse, Marci could get even more upset that the sub is delegating her job 3. Describe the guidelines already available that might affect each issue (values, laws, codes, practice, research). The fact the sub is treating the children different by race is racism and against the codes of the school. It is against Marcis values also when he treats the children that way. 4. Identify alternative decisions for each issue. Marci could bring her concern to either the sub or someone that is higher than her who brings in the subs. The children could talk to someone if they are feeling like they are getting treated different. 5. Identify the short-term, ongoing, and long term consequences, as well as the probability of their occurrence. Short-term- attitude towards each other, kids will be hurt, lack of ability to do job to the best of Marcis potential because of her concern. On-going- Grudge between sub and Marci, kids will misbehave or become distant with particular sub, bad mindset about sub from Marci and children Long-term- Lack of respect for sub from Marci and students, Children wont want him as a sub
6. Present evidence (or lack thereof) for those consequences.
Marci has concerns about sub, sub is avoiding Hispanic children, sub was rude and condescending 7. Rand order and vote on the decision (What would you do if you were the IA in these scenarios?) If I were the IA, I would try to respectfully bring up my concerns to higher up for advice to work with him and talk to him, if there would be no change I would talk to higher up again to see if they could do something. I would also spend a little bit more time with the children not getting the help to see if I can help in any way so they are not left out. Scenario 2 Juan, a teacher of a very diverse class of children with learning disabilities, had been ill for 2 days recently and Marci, the instructional assistant worked with a substitute teacher who delegated almost everything for the 2 days for her. In addition, the substitute teacher seemed to avoid the Hispanic children in the classroom, and when he did interact with them, was very rude and condescending. Juan has called in sick again and, although the instructional assistant asked for a different sub, she was informed that teacher selection was not within her job responsibilities. The substitute she previously had concerns about was the one selected to substitute again.
