Curriculum Title: Living Your Values
Utah State Standard: Health Education for 7th or 8th Grade - Students will demonstrate the ability to use knowledge, skills, and strategies related to mental and emotional health to enhance self-concept and relationships with others. Objective (s): Recognize the factors that influence personal values, beliefs, and perceived norms. Identify eight personal values and prioritize them in ascending order. Explain the the importance of personal values and beliefs and the influence it has on individual health practices. Materials: Powerpoint, Fake Money cards, Paper, Pencil, sticky notes (exit slip). Background for Teachers: Understand the definition of what a value is and be able to provide examples. What influences what we find important or valuable. How values can affect decisions and everyday behavior. Knowledge on how to present a power point. Intended Learning Outcomes: (same as objectives) The intent is for students to understand what values are and how their personal values can affect everyday decisions and behavior. Explaining the factors that influence values and how students can prioritize a value for each area of their life. Instructional Procedures: Getting to know the students on a personal level and discovering their inner motives in life. Each student will get a sheet of fake money to visually image the critical thinking scenario. The back of the sheet will be used to record what they would purchase with the million dollars. Have a few students volunteer to share their list. As the teacher, continue presenting the powerpoint and explain what values and why they matter. The purpose of the activity is to show that money is one indicator of where your heart or values are. After the students will start the Prioritizing Your Values activity, where they will prioritize their values. Then have the students divide into groups and share their lists. Discuss whether their lists changed. If so, why? Explaining how others often influence our values. The importance of living our values - reflects who we are. Finish with the exit slip question and take home activity. Family Connections: (take home activity)Complete take home assignment. Encourage students to discuss what other people in their life value as important - parents, siblings, friends. Assessment Plan: Before the students leave the class, I have prepared what is called an exit slip. The exit slip refers to the end of the lesson question, to determine what exactly they learned from the lesson that day. The students will answer the question on the sticky note I have given them and pin it on the front whiteboard before they leave.
