Secondary lesson plan
December 5, 2015
Standards:
a. Create equations that describe numbers or relationships
i. Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them
to solve problems. Include equations arising from linear and
quadratic functions, and simple rational and exponential
functions.
b. Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain
the reasoning
i. Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from
the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting
from the assumption that the original equation has a solution.
Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.
c. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies
to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas
and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in
meaningful ways. (INTASC standard #8)
Objectives:
1) The students will be able to identify what equations are needed in order to
solve various algebraic expressions.
2) The students will be able to develop their own algebraic expressions in
order to solve problems that do not have a specific equation assigned to
them.
Materials/Equipment:
Bingo game from mathbits.com Bingo card, Bingo answer sheet, pencil for
each student, small pieces of paper to number 1-25, container to hold
numbers
Procedures:
a) Teacher procedures:
i) Before class begins, number 25 pieces of paper 1-25 and place in a
container of some sort. (This will later be used to call out the coordinating
spaces and questions on the BINGO game.) Also pull up the bingo game
from the web address,
http://mathbits.com/MathBits/PPT/Algebra1Bingo/Algebra1Bingo.html
ii) Hand out the matching BINGO card
iii) Ask students to number the card (in any random fashion) from 1 to 25
(there will be no free space)
iv) Project the Bingo Game slides and stop on the Bingo Board.
v) Pull a piece of paper from the container and announce the number.
vi) When you announce the number, click on that number from the Bingo
Board to show the question. Students solve the problem and place their

answer on their BINGO card in the box containing the number of the
question.
vii) BINGO is achieved in the normal manner: horizontally, diagonally, and
vertically.
viii) Students raise their hands if they have BINGO. Teacher checks the
answers to see if the student has won.
ix) If all the answers are correct BINGO will be a homework pass or a pass on
one daily quiz. (The student may choose which they would like)
x)
xi) When a student wins, EVERYONE continues playing on the SAME card,
including the winning student (he/she could win again). Place a red line
through the win line so the student can continue playing.
xii) Continue playing until ALL of the questions have been answered.
xiii) Collect students bingo cards and give points to ensure student
participation
b) Student procedures
i) When teacher passes out BINGO cards begin numbering each square 1-25
in a random order.
ii) As the numbers are called the teacher will put the correlating problem up
on the screen and you must solve that problem. Write you answer on the
box numbered the same as the number of the problem
iii) When you have four squares solved in a row (horizontally, vertically, or
diagonally) raise your hand and call out BINGO.
iv) The teacher will check your answers and if ALL are correct you will have
the opportunity to choose either a homework pass or a pass on one daily
quiz as a reward.
v) Once someone wins EVERYONE continues playing on the same board until
all the questions have been answered. (The teacher will place a red line
through the questions you already won a BINGO for.)
Closure:
This is meant to be more of a review lesson so at the end the students will
discuss what they feel comfortable with and ask for further explanation on
how to do problems they are unsure of.
Assessment:
The assessment for this will be the exam that will follow the next class period.
*10 points will be awarded just for participating in the review.
*Half a point of extra credit will be given for every correct answer on
the Bingo sheet.
