Lesson title The Process of Naturalization

Step 1Desired Results
Standards, benchmarks, other objectives as needed (e.g., IEP)What should students know, understand, and be able to
do as a result of the lesson?
MDE Standard: 9.1.3.5.2. Describe process of naturalization; explain the role of the federal government in
establishing immigration policies.
Iste Standard: 4a Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation
Objectives:
1) When asked how long the process of naturalization takes the student will be able to write it on a
piece of paper immediately.
2) When shown a map students will be able to point out Ellis Island on their first try.
3) Students will be able to act out the process of naturalization when given a video camera and the
class period to prepare
Students will be able to know the basic process of naturalization for entering the United States and able to
synthesize the information enough to put themselves in the shoes of an entering immigrant to the U.S.

Step 2Assessment Evidence

Performance taskWhat will students do to show what they have learned?
Performance criteriaHow good is good enough to meet standards?
Assessments: At the end of the first class period the teacher will put two questions on the interactive white
board.
1) How long does Naturalization take typically?
2) Where is Ellis Island on this map? (See assessment)
3) Teacher will grade the videos of the students on whether or not they correctly acted out the process
of naturalization.

Step 3Learning Plan

Learning activities (step by step from start to finish, detailed enough for another teacher to follow)
Day 1:
1. Students will come into class and teacher will take attendance (2 minutes)
2. Teacher will explain what is happening in the class period (3 minutes)
a) Teacher will do a quick lecture on naturalization (process, length, important places like Ellis and
Angel Island).
b) Teacher will split students up in to 5 different groups.
c) Students will be given last half of class period and first half of next class period to do a
filming/acting project of naturalization
3. Teacher will begin quick naturalization lecture. The teacher will explain why people choose to
immigrate, that they use to come through Ellis Island and Angel island, and the overall process and
length of the entire naturalization process (10 minutes)
4. Teacher will number students off in to five different groups and have them sit next to each other (5
minutes)
5. The teacher will explain to the separated groups what is happening. The teacher will explain that
the students have access to the computer lab to do additional research, and access to video cameras
if needed. The goal of the assignment is to either have students act out a process of naturalization or
make a video. Students can either do a real life example of somebody trying to immigrate in to the
United States, or an instructional video/skit. The teacher will be grading on whether or not the
students are showing knowledge of the process of naturalization If students choose to do a video
they will be given an extra 10% on the project. The teacher will have previously rented 5 video
cameras from the technology area of the school. (5 minutes)
6. The students will be given the rest of class to research and prepare their skit/video either in the
classroom or the computer lab. (25-30 minutes)
Day 2:
1. Students will come in to class and teacher will take attendance (3 minutes)
2. Students may continue working on their project and teacher announces that the teacher will stop all
work in twenty minutes so the students may present their work (20 minutes)
3. After the twenty minutes are up the students will then begin presenting their work, whether it be a
video or a skit. Teacher will be timing to make sure each group does not exceed 5 minutes. Teacher
will also be grading to see if the students present correct knowledge on the naturalization process
(20-25 minutes)

4. Once all groups are done the teacher will put the assessment on the board and ask the students to
write the answers on their own paper. Teacher will then collect papers (5 minutes)
5. Class dismissed!
