Leadership vs. Boss-ship

Connor Marchetti, for some can be an acquired taste. Connor is a 2nd

Lieutenant in the U.S Army while also working at Roadrunner Sports as a shift
manager on 75th and Rt 59 in Naperville. Connor has been working there for 7
months which already obtaining manager, demonstrates his leadership qualities
that also serve him well in the Army. He has been known to be aside from the crowd
even growing up, showing tremendous drive and a will to succeed in what he
attempts while also gathering those around him and making them, in a way, better.
This might be their attitude or their view on how they approach a problem but the
concept is the same, his performance inspires those who surround him which is the
core principle of being a leader.
Mr. Marchetti stands at 6 feet or 6.1, depending if he stretched in the morning
or not. His profile is an average body type although his shoulders are a bit broad
and he assumes to be bigger due to his barrel chested nature. When suited up in his
gear and uniform, this gives him a more physically commanding role compared to
others around him that is extremely noticeable. Connor, no matter what time of day
or how many times he has shaven that day, always carries a heavy five O clock
shadow that gives him a first impression of someone a little older. His volition when
speaking and moving shows experience beyond those 23 years and proves it when
addressing someone. He is very direct- blunt- but
with a stylistic light heartedness that doesnt
overpower the person being spoken to but
informs them that what they are talking about is
absolutely the most important topic at that time.
His vocal maturity and physical swagger
commands the room in which he is in.
Connor has always had the ability to
converse with others professionally and in a calm
but firm way that suited his leadership style well
all through life, and was refined while he
attended ROTC and into the Army when he
Commissioned earlier this year. He has the ability
to put the person he is with on the same level as
him, including the officers above him and personnel under his command, which in

the Army is impressive and builds confidence and trust among his men as they see
him as a leader, not a boss who shouts orders and demands results.
When an officer first meets his unit the judgment is heavy. Many, if not all
people in his command have been working together and deployed together. Making
the group a tight knit one. For anyone joining that group is hard enough because
reputation is everything in the Military and for Connor meeting his unit was like
being dropped into a flash pan. His reputation had not been established, he wasn't
tested, and he was as new as an 18 year old private from boot camp, just with an
officer rank and more pay.
Shortly after meeting his unit Connor displayed his qualities of leadership by
talking to his men as people and not just barking order because he the power now.
He was humble about his experience and made the environment relaxed,
demonstrating an open line of communication up and down the rank structure and
adjusting this new unit to his style of cooperativeness without breaking protocol or
seeming unprofessional. In the Military, being approachable as a leader can make
all the difference and make unit cohesion more effective.
Along with showing his ability for public speaking and being able to bring
himself to an approachable level with people around him he is also adept at Military
tradecraft, but more importantly, he teaches and is able to relay information clearly,
precisely, and logically. One of the
qualities about Connor that sets him apart Connor Marchetti at ROTC field exercise before

for help. This seemingly easy idea is a focal point when leadership is brought up in
the Military. He isn't afraid to say he is wrong and he isn't afraid to take into
consideration the input and experience of others around him regardless of rank.
Connor is, in the truest sense of the word, a leader. Not a boss.
