Helping Children Cope with Anger

Overall
Treat childs anger with respect
Dont let child to act on their anger
Accept childs feeling as real and valid
Dont contradict the childs feelings

Caregivers
Be empathetic

Be able to set aside own feelings when appropriate

Help children recognize accept and cope with own feelings
Model appropriate feelings and ways of expressing them

Ways to Deal
1. Prevention
Toys need to be age appropriate and good repair
Dont remove all frustration limits problem solving
2. Provide for their needs
Let them cry it shows emotion that they are upset
Early crying later becomes refined physical activity as
they grow then becomes words
Allowing infants to cry will lead to being able to direct
angry toddlers energy
Give them (model) ways to cover up anger(healthy)
3. Consider cultures
Have different ideas about expressing anger
Dont see independence as a goal
Consider what the parent wants for his/her child
