5 I Final Report for Mr_Tannet Beason —_ ‘Teacher Mentor Comments (Continued) In these classes, Tanner used many different types of assessments. His summative assessments were outcomes based which is in line with the science department at LCI. Tanner ‘worked very hard this semester on his formative assessments. We had various discussions about understanding what the students know and don’t know. His formative assessments was one of the most improved areas this semester. He now sees the value of effective assessments and realizes the importance of having the end in sight when starting to develop a unit or lesson. He started to develop some confidence in his assessment practices which shows that he is well on his way to developing appropriate forms of both formative and summative assessment. Tanner always behaved in a very professional manner in the classroom as well as, elsewhere in the school. He was very punctual and assumed all the roles of outside the classroom right from the start. These included supervision, regular department meetings, staff meetings, and professional development sessions. Tanner willingly participated in helping out with our co- curricular programs supervising and running gates. This gave him an opportunity to connect with students outside the classroom, Tanner was a great colleague to have in the building as he was always willing to collaborate. This was seen during his time on the PD committee. He would help plan PD days and even ran a session that was offered to his colleagues. This showed how he values professional development and his willingness to work with others in the school. It is important for new teachers to see the value of teamwork and collaboration with other teachers while at the same time developing their own approach to curriculum delivery. Classroom management is a strength for Tanner. He consistently gains the attention of all the students before beginning a lecture and generally does not have difficulty keeping students ‘on task. Tanner was very careful to thoroughly lay out his expectations at the beginning of the semester and this paid off for him tremendously. Tanner used several management strategies for problem situations such as: consistent consequences; dealing individually with students; contacting parents; and arranging homework for students that miss classes. He was also very conscious of problems presented by laboratory settings and took the correct precautions to ensure a safe laboratory. He continuously displayed confidence in his management strategies and adjusted his techniques based on the situations that were presented to him. His presence in the classroom was always positive and respectful, which helped him create and maintain a safe, caring and productive classroom environment. Tanner is able to reflect on his teaching performance which is one of his greatest strengths. This strength will allow him to continually grow throughout his teaching career. He has the knowledge, skill and ability to become an outstanding teacher and will no doubt be a to the profession. c/0
