Grade Level: 9th Grade

Subject: Art, 5x Day Lesson (45 min.)

Prepared By: Benjamin E. Hoffman, Student Art Teacher

Lesson Summary: Artists Trading Cards are an accessible means for artists to construct miniature-sized artworks that can be easily traded with one another. This
particular lesson poses the problem on how to store, display and easily access the cards when needed. This simply constructed book has the opportunity to hold up
to twenty cards without affecting the actual Artist Trading Card itself. Folded paper sleeves hold the cards in place as they rotate out into a fan for display. Students
will construct two booklets to separately store their individual artworks from their informative Artist Trading Cards. The smaller booklet will provide students with an
outlet to study from and use as a resource while their larger booklet will act as a portfolio in which will house their artwork. A combination of paint, colored pencils,
markers, stamps and an individualized portrait will encompass the outer cover of their portfolio.
Big Idea: Throughout time and across cultures, miniature-sized artworks have made art more accessible to one another through
means of sharing and trading. Similar to a portfolio, the multitude of artworks brought together emanate the notions of
community as well as individual creativity.

Standards Addressed:

Instructional Resources:

Content Standard #2: Using knowledge of structures and functions

(9-12) Students create multiple solutions to specific visual arts problems that demonstrate competence in producing effective relationships
between structural choices and artistic functions.

Verification/Assessment:
Pre-Assessment:

For many individuals, this Humanities course

would be their first true exposure to the visual
& performing arts. Students would be asked
to share any/all previous knowledge in which
they could attribute to the theme, Art and
Music, 1950 Present.

Formative Assessment:

Evaluate students interpersonal skills, work

habits & attitudes as they work. This portfolio
will be a visual reference to track the progress
of each student throughout the semester as
well as record of missing assignments.

Summative:

Students will construct two booklets to

separately store their individual artworks from
their informative Artist Trading Cards.
Students smaller booklet will include
information on the various artists studied
while their large portfolios will include their
related artworks.

Instructional Procedures
Motivation/Engagement/The Hook:

Every other day, students complete a Bell Ringer to allow for students to settle down as they enter
the classroom. The Artist Trading Card Booklet will take the place of these activities as it will allow
students to continue to develop their ideas throughout the semester as they continue to explore
art throughout the ages. This outlet will act as a constant review for students as well as formative
assessment for the teacher.

Development:

Following the completion of folding their 2x booklets, student may begin to design their portfolios
using a combination of paint, colored pencils, markers & stamps. Following a teacher led
demonstration, students will capture a photo of themselves using Photo Booth to then upload and
create a stencil. Using clear packing tape, students will transfer their printed image onto their
portfolio. Each Personalized Artist Trading Card Portfolio will include a minimum of 5x constructed
pages. Over the course of several weeks, students will explore as well as document new artists
and processes to include in their smaller booklet. Physical artworks will subsequently follow.

Culmination/Close:

The culmination of this lesson will result in students having two incredible references to share
and/or trade with one another if applicable. Students smaller booklets will act as a resource to
review from as it will contain information on the various artists studied throughout the course of
the semester. The large portfolio will include the physical artwork that relates to each artist. Any
additional artworks or images may be included in their final portfolio before submitting for a final
grade upon meeting all other requirements as stated in the objectives.
