Subject/Topic: Map Skills
Rationale: I can show my understanding and comprehension of map skills by creating my own map of a dog park for Shiloh
including all of the map skills.

Objectives:

The students will interpret and construct maps using their knowledge of grid systems, legends,
symbols, scales, and compass roses
The students will use an atlas to point out and describe a variety of regions in the United
States such as political, population, and economic regions that result from patterns of human
activity
The students will an atlas to describe regions such as landform, climate, and vegetation regions
such as the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Coastal Plains.

Lesson Plan:

Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):

Now that we have read the story and Marty gets to keep Shiloh you will be getting the chance to create a dream dog park
for Marty to take Shiloh. First we are going to learn about the different things that every blueprint or map should have
included. That way you can include all the proper map parts within your dog park.

Process:

Information Giving:

The map skills vocabulary that we will be learning throughout the next few days will also be the vocabulary you will use for
next Fridays test. Therefore since I feel some of this vocabulary needs to have a little more time spent, I am going to split
the words up to allow you guys to really comprehend the information by the time of the test
Once we have learned all the vocabulary we will then use our knowledge and incorporate it into creating our very own map of a
dog park

Modeling & Guided Practice:

On Friday will be putting together a vocabulary cut out flipbook that the students will glue into their note book
This is to make some of the notes a little less writing for them, but to give them a different strategy to study their vocab
as well. The flipbook will include the vocabulary words (title, compass rose, scale, legend (map key), and grid system). We will
also read about these definitions in their Social Studies textbook
Monday we will do the vocabulary words regions and symbols in which students will discuss a variety of different regions.
They will read about the different types of maps and regions within their textbook, along with looking at the characteristics
of the Great Plains, Grand Canyon, and Rocky Mountains. Once I feel students have grasped the two concepts I will pass out
an atlas to each student I will then call upon each student to point out different regions and symbols and their location
within a given map so that every student gets the practice learning how to read a map
Tuesday the students will learn their final set of vocabulary longitude and latitude. I saved this one for last cause these
were going to be the hardest for students to wrap their heads around. I will first take extensive notes with them in their
journal for each work we will include the ways the lines run, are measured, their nicknames, and digraphs for them to
visualize the vocab. I will have each student draw a circle and show how the line run along with a compass rose to they can
have a sense of direction. Students will then get a chance to look at a globe to see exactly how the invisible lines run around
the earth.

Check for Understanding:

The students will play kahoot with the vocabulary words to check for understanding on Wednesday once we have learned the
entire vocab for the quiz

Independent Practice:

Students will have stations to complete throughout the week in which I have set out 3 different stations for students to do
with map skills. They will get a chance to use all of their vocabulary and put it into practice along with getting to handle a
globe themselves.

Closure:

Now that we have learned all the concepts that need to be included within a map we can start creating our dog park. At this
point I will review the rubric for the park and we will do a short lesson on rules. As they will have to come up with 5 dog park
rules that meet the criteria needed for the rules to be
enforceable, fair, and understanding.

Enrichment/Extension:

The students will create their dog park here and include the
map parts such as grid system, compass rose, scale, legend,
symbols, and regions
Ex. (final product)

Accommodations:
1. I will have copies of all the notes for my two dyslexic students that wont be in class during the time of the lessons.

Assessment/Evaluation (Students):

Students will be evaluated on Friday through their vocabulary test on their knowledge of map skills
Along with the rubric and Q&A created for the dog park map

Assessment/Evaluation (Self):

This lesson was very effective and because I decided to split the vocab up over a
multiple day stretch the students were able to grasp the concept much better and it showed on their vocab test scores as
well as the quality and inclusion of the map skills within their dog parks.
