Welcome Letter
UWRT 1103 Fall 2015
Dear Professor Muesing and fellow UWRT classmates:
I was born in Panama City Beach, Florida and throughout my childhood I was
moved around a lot. Subsequently I have lived in six different states (Florida, New
York, Illinois, California, Maryland, and North Carolina), one foreign country
(Thailand), and countless cities. I attended thirteen different schools in making my
way from kindergarten to high school graduation, and because of this I am quite the
outgoing social butterfly without an ounce of shyness. My parents divorced when I
was little, and from their remarriages I am now the oldest of seven children with
four brothers and two sisters. I also have one niece and one nephew. Growing up I
was dedicated to my studies, often seeking and acquiring knowledge in areas
beyond the scope of my traditional classes, and an avid soccer player since I joined
a recreational team at age four. I played soccer on a year round competitive
traveling league both indoor and outdoor since I was eight, and also on my
school teams.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue higher education in the field
of science and always excelled in school. Often times I have been coined an
overachiever, but I truly just have a passion for exploration, discovery, and learning.
This coincides with my natural interest in traveling that my grandparents have also
strongly reinforced. Senior year of high school I applied to the three schools I was
interested in and got accepted into all of them, but I declined each acceptance due
to personal circumstances. After high school graduation in 2006, I spent the
summer enjoying myself with friends and eventually applied to UNCC for the fall
semester. I attended until February 2007, when I decided that I wanted to capitalize
on my youth and travel the world. I thoroughly explored and experienced thirtyseven countries in my five-year scholastic hiatus. I backpacked through the majority
of them, to fully immerse myself into the land and cultures. It was the best decision
I have ever made.
In 2012 I decided that it was time to surrender my travels and focus on
continuing my studies. I reapplied to UNCC and am entering my senior year with the
intention of completing three B.S. degrees in Chemistry, Psychology, and Biology. I
originally wanted to work with equivocating neurological genetic mutations with
socio-behaviors and psychological disorders, but have since made that a fun topic of
interest after finding an uncanny passion in organic chemistry. Through my passion
and dedication I have been fortunate enough to already be a published chemist in
the field of organic chemistry. For my future goals, I plan to pursue fundamental
research in the niche field of fluorine chemistry after the completion of my PhD,
which I intend to complete at Uppsala University in Sweden. I am currently a
research chemist by day and a bartender uptown by night, all while being a full time
student pursuing my degrees and I couldnt be more in love with my life.
I have not taken a formal writing class in over ten years and I hope to not
only improve but also extend my skills in this area. With my field of study, I am
accustomed to the concise and factual writing in a scientific journal format and
would enjoy expanding those horizons. I look forward to the challenges offered in
this course. I am also anxious to see my personal improvements over the semester
in many areas of the writing process.

Sincerely,
Victoria Wait
