Name: Nicholas Garza

Class time period: 1:00pm-2:20pm

1) Which museum did you visit? Univ. of Utah
2) In 150 words, describe at least one of the broad collections on a theme, period, geographic
region, or topic) within the museum.
One of the collection were I think European 16th & 17th Centuries. The room was based
off of religious figures with a painting of Jesus Christ that was crucified on the cross, this was on
a wall, correctly centered. Which made me nervous just being in the room, but made me stay
because around it shown other certain art depicting from deaths or events that were religious
based, the room was colorful and gave a vibe to the room.
3) Give a brief, one paragraph (100 words) description of a special exhibit (ask the curator what
these are; they are usually in one of the first rooms):
One of the special exhibits was Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends. It was a bizarre
room filled with homemade costumes; even ones sculptured by him, doodle drawings framed,
and videos of him dressed up and in front of a backdrop. A few of the videos of sculptures were
shown in different parts of other galleries that depict from either: a mushroom face - to one with
different parts of animal feathers made into a face. Being in that room, with all the art together
made me question his sanity each creation seen.
4) What kind of information is provided about the works? Tell me three places you might find
more detailed information that doesnt include the web {hint: ask a curator for help with this
question}
One way to get info from these works is asking him yourself, you can talk to him in
certain times at the museum. A second is, a paper with all the list of artworks; how its made and
in what year, even the materials used in his costumes, all of these was at wall near his exhibit.
Lastly is galleries in Los Angeles, he was born and lives there, so getting info from other
museums there seems reliable.
5) Choose several works that particularly appealed to you. Explain why you were drawn to these
works. Comment on the subject, style, medium, time period, etc. Who were the artists?) This
question must be answered in its entirety. (This should be at least 500 words)
The Death of Saint Jerome created by Bartolomeo Di Giovanni; the artwork caught my
attention by lively colors, done with tempera which is interesting to use, it was around 1490 with
the paint looking worn out but, still able to look at. Though the story behind it got more
interesting which was Saint Jerome in ragged clothes, and surrounded by grieving monk. He had
a lion, right by his side throughout his death; barely seen at the bottom-left corner of the
painting. Reason why it was by Jerome side is, he noticed the lion had a thorn in his paw, and
pulled it out for him; the lion stayed with him after that.

The Ambush of Captain Allan McLane - James Peale. This was painted around 1803
depicting the revolutionary war; which I like enjoying to look at paintings based off of. The work
is an Oil on canvas, the colors give off more of a bland look I would say, but still caught my
attention. It shows Mclane in the painting to me as a, type of leader from the perspective because
it explains that he was ambushed, and saying he fended off the attack and escaped; killing one
British soldier, and clubbing the other.
The Return of Marcus Sextus - Pierre-Narcisse Guerin. What caught my attention was it
was more dreadful feeling because of Marcus's facial expression, I would say shock, distress
when seeing his wife laying lifeless and the daughter crying on the floor. The whole painting just
gives off a saddened tone. The painting seemed to come from, a romanticism period I'm guessing
which I can understand if this is the case. The colors of it were shades of gray which makes it an
interesting painting I would say, because it makes you understand what his emotions are towards
this situation.
Tobias and the Archangel Raphael - Alessandro Varotari. What drew me to this was the
colors and mainly the guy with wings; until after reading the description he was an archangel, so
I just pretended I didn't read that. Anyway, what's its being told is Tobias is on an adventure until
attacked by a big fish (Guessing a land fish?) Raphael the archangel insists he kills it and take his
heart, liver, and gall; to help with exorcisms and heal blindness. Tobias returns home from his
adventure, and restores his fathers sight with the gall. Raphael reveals himself as a divine
messenger sent to reward the family's piety. How it was created was using Oil on canvas, and it
looked great to me though it can give off a lack of vivid imagery if not shown context.
6) How did the artworks you looked at relate to material we have discussed in class? {They do
relate in many ways, you just need to look for those relationships} Minimum of 150 words.
The works Ive looked at, they usually were drawn during certain religious events,
depicting sadness or joy. Even besides religious art work, there were others that focused on
historical events of countries that shown a turning point in future development of a country. The
faces that were shown in the artworks showed confusion, grief, sadness, anger, and happiness
giving us a clear understanding of how that event affect others in that time period.
7) What was your personal reaction to this experience? Would you enjoy attending this type of
event again? Why or why not? {Minimum 100 words}
I enjoyed going to the museum, usually because there might be that one exhibit that can
make you question, and be uncomfortable about the type of art its trying to display. Besides that
certain exhibit it was nice to see different artworks displayed that were worn out, showing many
years lasting through being painted over and wearing out. I would attend another museum like
this if it had more than just two special exhibits, more pieces from certain time periods. Its quite
nice to look at certain artworks once in a while because you get to see it more in person than on
the internet.
