1. Setting the Stage (2 minutes) (Jing-Mao)


- Introduce the learning objectives for this class (read out)
- By the end of the class students will be able to:
a. Analyze active learning and experiential learning;
b. Compare and contrast group learning strategies (1.peer tutoring, 2.think-pair-share, and
3.syndicate/jigsaw);
c. Assess the utility of applying experiential learning strategies in your field (1.the case
method, 2.problem based learning, 3.games, simulation, and role play, and 4.field
experience).
- Introduce the plan for the class (Write the outline on the board before class begins)
2. MaterialActive Learning (17 minutes) (Murodbek)
- Introduction (2 minutes)
o Give a brief description of what active learning is and why it is important
- Jigsaw (15 minutes)
a. Divide the class into three groups by counting 1,2,3.
b. Explain the task. This exercise has two rounds:
c. First round (5 minutes): Discuss Peer Tutoring (group 1), Think-Pair-Share (group 2), and
Syndicate/Jigsaw (group 2) in your groups. Prepare as much as you can so that you can
explain your topic to another group.
d. Second round (10 minutes): Move to other groups and take turns teaching your topic.

a. Divide people into two groups: social sciences and natural sciences
b. Question for discussion: How can experiential learning be applied to your
disciplines/fields?
- Whole class discussion: each group gives an example. (5 minutes)
