Letter of Transmittal

Literacy Narrative
Although my literacy narrative targets anyone willing to read it, people who are
interested in reading life experiences and want to apply it to there lives will be reading my
literacy narrative along with many other narratives. Due to my narrative intending to be read by
anyone and that the narrative is about me, my language and voice in my narrative is closely
related to the language and voice of my mind and myself in order to give the reader a
understanding of my thought process as I experienced them in my narrative. In my literacy
narrative, along with many other literacy narratives, I will use my experiences and my reflection
on those experiences to convey a message to the audience so that they can reflect on the issue
without going through the same experiences as the author. In my case, my literacy narratives
purpose is to tell the reader to devote effort to their goals, whatever your outlook on life is. The
process of writing this narrative involved major changes due to revision. This revision included
sessions with instructors, tutors, and students. This helped majorly since my peers effectively
found misunderstandings in my essay. Another major factor to the development of this essay is
the time in between first and final drafts. After waiting awhile it felt like you were reading
someone elses essay, which also helped me find misunderstandings. Such misunderstandings
included lack of detail in events, poor choice of where to put dialogue, and a more refined
conclusion and ending paragraphs.

Rhetorical Analysis
Although my rhetorical analysis paper targets anyone willing to read it, people that have
been effected by prison systems in the past, whether someone they know or they themselves have

been in prison, will gain most benefits from reading my paper on When Prisoners Protest by
Wilbert Rideau. Optionally, it is also targeted toward everyone in America since inmates in these
prisons will soon be working with you and your loved ones in society once they are out of
prison. As for my language and voice in this essay, it is different than in my narrative because
this is analytical and not personal thoughts and ideas. My language and voice is based on logical
reasoning and therefor my language and voice is judgmental. In my analysis paper, my main goal
as the author is to analyze Rideaus op-ed using rhetorical sensitivity and thus to see if Rideaus
main claim is valid for both his and my readers to assimilate into their lives. Revision for this
essay has also heavily influenced the final product. Same with the narrative, the revision
included sessions with instructors, tutors, and students and also the time in between first and
final drafts. Having peer reviews helped this essay in that if found unnecessary content. The time
in between first and final drafts also helped me find unnecessary content. This unnecessary
content included the unnecessary inclusion of an organization paragraph that discussed the
organization of Rideaus op-ed. Coupled with the unnecessary paragraph were transitions in each
paragraph thereafter that navigated what part of Rideaus op-ed I discussed. After peer reviews
and time in between drafts, I completely removed the organization paragraph and replaced it with
a single sentence stating that I will be analyzing Rideaus points as he brings them up in his oped. And instead of putting transitions with each paragraph like, In the second section, Rideau
begins , I instead put different transitions like Rideau logically proposes.
Conclusion
Throughout my semester in English 1010, I have found noticeable changes to my writing.
As of now, I believe that rhetorical analysis has been the most important and useful topic in
English that I have learned throughout all my life. This is because it teaches me how to become
sensitive to other peoples writing and see if they effectively convey their message. Not only this

but I have learned to apply rhetoric to my own writing so that I can also effectively convey my
message. Coupled with learning rhetoric, is my newfound respect for revision and the process of
writing. Due to the revision practices in this class, I have seen how powerful revision can help
my writing. I can see this because of the changes it has done to my first draft, which are
discussed above. I did not just only learn these two skills, but I also have learned many other tips
and tricks like how to effectively research, brainstorming, and annotating. Overall, I believe this
class has helped me identify myself in writing. Before this class, I had not unique properties or
characteristic when writing in High School. But now, I feel like I have my own style and I know
how to effectively write and analyze papers instead of just gibberish.
