Extra Credit Problem of the Week

Due Friday, December 11

*If you have not completed the minimum of two POWs a month, this POW
will replace one of your missing POWs and will not count as extra credit.

Understanding The Problem:

This pow is asking us to use the lengths they gave us to find the area of
triangle AEB.
Process.
1.I found what length F and A is by using pythagorean theorem
32+12=c2
9+1=c2
10=c2

The square root of 10 is 3.16

2. Then I know that on a rectangle the sides parallel from each other have
the same lengths so I know that CB has a length of 3
3.I then took that information and did pythagorean theorem again to find the
length of GB
32+22=c2
9+4=c2
13=c2
The square root of 13 is 3.6
4.I moved on to find the side length G to F
I know the length of DC is 5 so I just had to had to add DF and GC and then
subtract it from 5, which makes the length of GF 2
5.I find out by examining the small triangle that it's an equilateral triangle
which means the other sides are also have 2 as there side length
6.I then add the length of AF and GB to 3
3.16+3=6.16
3.6+3=6.6
7. I already know the length of AB is five so I don't need to do anything to
find the area of the triangle
8.I do need to draw a line from point E to the base to get the height and to
find the height I will use Pythagorean theorem. I found the height is 6.47
9.I use the triangle area formula, A=BH/2, which will give me the area of the
triangle AEB
6.47*5=32.35
32.35/2=16.175
Solution:
The area of the Triangle AEB is 16.175
Justification:
The beginning part of this step was really easy for me but once I got to
finding lengths of the small triangle, I got really stuck and from the small
triangle I feel everything went downhill. So I believe the first part of my POW
is correct but the rest is incorrect including the solution for this POW. I feel
this incorrect because in the last few steps I didnt really use map, I just used
what I thought I saw.
