Learning Objectives/Goals
The lessons objectives and intended learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student
needs
TSW learn the concept that there is no one certain way to use art materials, but that there are certain
ways to take care of the materials.
TSW learn that they have the power to make artistic choices.
TSW understand the concept that we are part of much more broad identities such as their class identity.
TSW learn what they have in common with others in their class and what different art materials have in
common.

Assessment (the type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)

Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson.
I will be assessing through means of discussion about what students learned from reflecting on the
artist journal assignment. I will also be looking at the exit slips to see what students learned about their
materials and what they are going to share with the class to teach others.

Lesson Structure and Procedures

Sequence of events of the lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.,
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion)
Set up
1. Have all materials out and ready.
2. Have PowerPoint up and ready.
Day 1
1. Assign students an artist journal assignment. They must take their artist journals and on one
page write and draw something that is a major part of their identity in the middle.
2. Then they will choose a colored marker that represents them in some way and go around and
sign each page that has a picture of something that is a major part of their identity as well.
3. Discuss the things we have in common using the following questions: How many names are on
your page. What does that mean? Did someone sign your AJ who you thought you had nothing
in common with? How does that change your thinking?
4. Using PowerPoint, introduce students to students working with this same idea.
5. Students will look at two artworks comparing commonalities and differences, but ultimately
understanding that we can create identities with art with or without painting portraits.
Conclusion
1. Reflective discussion about what students learned about themselves and the materials.
2. Exit slip about what they learned that they could share with the class about their materials they
worked with.

Instructional Strategies
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and meet their needs.
The teacher will provide many opportunities to respond to ensure student engagement. The teacher will
use technology to present the lesson to reach the iKid generationTeacher will get student feedback to
ensure that students needs will be met if they have not been after the lesson. Students will discuss and
learn what they have in common with those around them by doing a fun up-and-moving activity. Students
will have a chance to play with and explore the materials.

Learning Activities

Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives.
Teacher will have students write one word and draw a picture in the middle of an artist journal
page that represents a large part of their identity such as family, god, friends, pets, etc. Students
will take a marker choosing a color that represents them and walk around the room signing any
of the pages that are a large part of their identity. Then, they will reflect on the activity.

Students will compare two students artworks looking for commonalities and
differences and how they both show identity.
Students will be instructed to play and experiment with new art materials and will
be required to present their findings to the class.
Students will fill out an exit slip before leaving class answering the question: What
was one thing you learned while experimenting that you would like to share with
the class?

Resources and Materials

List of tools, personnel, and materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson.
Pencils
Artist Journals
Markers
Tempera Cakes
Paint Brushes
Water Cups
Magazines
Glue
Scissors
PowerPoint Presentation
Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student
learning.
Teacher will use a projector and PowerPoint presentation during instruction. Students will interact with
the images presented.
Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increases in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.
If students are struggling, the teacher will assign a student helper to those students in need of extra
assistance. If further help is needed, the teacher will work with the students in need one-on-one.

Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student

behavior needs to help keep the students on task and actively engaged.

Teacher has the students enter while using TUMS to set a positive environment for the classroom (Touch
them, Use their name, Make eye contact, Smile). Teacher has taught behavior expectations at the
beginning of the year so students know what is expected. Classroom expectations are also posted on
the wall as a reminder. There are seats placed away from other students in case the student needs to be
separated from class for behavioral reasons. Teacher will use a 4 to 1 ratio for positives versus
negatives. Teacher provides many opportunities to respond to keep students engaged.

Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend the students understanding of and thinking about
the learning objectives by applying their new knowledge in a different way.

Students will collaborate on a class portrait to learn about and understand group identities.

Follow-Up to Todays Lesson

Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student
understanding and interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout
the unit).

Teacher will require an exit slip for students to leave the class. They will respond to the following
prompts: What did you learn about the materials you worked with today that you would like to share with
the class? The students will hand these to the teacher completed as they walk out of the room. The
teacher will have the students share next time they come to class.
