The End of Privacy? By: Daniel J. Solove
Daniel J. Solove essay The End of Privacy? Speaks about how privacy will soon be
fading away due to websites invading privacy with examples of social sites. Throughout the
article he uses ethos, pathos and logos meaning he uses emotion, logic and creditability to argue
and prove his point. He presents these very well throughout his article.
The general issue is the author speaks about is how there is barely any privacy any more.
The author audience seems to be targeted more towards younger people, but also adults as well
because he mentions various examples that young people can relate, also uses social sites as
examples to explain his points and logic. Daniel J. Solove a professor of law at The George
Washington University Law School believes that Privacy is coming to an end due to social sites
and how some websites invade ones privacy. The article The End of Privacy? Argues why he
thinks this is happening and what is causing it, While Using Ethos, Pathos and Logos to make his
argument effective.
Pathos is used to establish emotion, to make the reader feel sympathy. Solove uses
examples of pathos in the beginning of the article with the star wars kid. He is known around
the world by tens of millions of people. Unfortunately, his notoriety is for one of the most
embarrassing moments in his life. This quote is an example of how Solove gets the reader to

feel sympathy. It causes sympathy because one word alone embarrassing grabs the reader
sympathetic side. Another example of emotion shown is another quote from the article All
across the blogosphere. People started mocking the boy, making fun of him for being pudgy,
awkward and nerdy. This gets the readers emotion because he talks about why the kid was
being made fun of because of his appearance and what he was doing. He uses few examples of
pathos but does not really focus on that as much as the other rhetorical devices. Daniel J. Solove
also presents Logos in his argument about privacy.
Logos means logic, which also can be based on facts. Soloves uses some examples of
logos. The section Generation Google of the article is where he speaks about young people and
social networks. Most of the section, Solove speaks about how young people are using social
networks more, he speaks about various times in each paragraph It is a new topic but still
relevant to what the overall section is about. Fast facts are also used on the side of this section
which is relevant, but also they are used to make his claims in each paragraph about social
networks and young people valid. The fast facts are examples of logos because it does deal with
logic and facts to back up your argument, which is what Solove is doing. Social Sites are also
used throughout the article as facts as support about privacy. One these social sites include
Facebook, The issue of control over personal information came to the fore in 2006 when
Facebook launched a feature called News Feed, which sent a notice to peoples friends registered
with the service when their profile was changed or updated. This quote is an example of facts he
used to support his claim on privacy on social sites and when it first started. Even Though Logos
was presented to support his argument by using facts, ethos is also need to prove a valid
argument.

Ethos which is another term for credibility; it means does the author use credible sources
to help back up whats being argued and. Scott McNealy is referred to by Solove, he uses a quote
from him when he is speaking about what is to be done about privacy, You already have zero
privacy. Get over it. Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems is an example of a credible source
used to establish ethos. The quote used from Scott McNealy shows that he used a quote from a
guy who is a business and a company that dealt with computers which is relevant to what most
the article is about. John Dewey an American philosopher is another example, he uses a quote
from him as well when speaking about the future of reputation, which is speaking of how people
want to start over or re-invent themselves a person is not something complete, perfect, [or]
finished, but is something moving, changing, discrete, and above all initiating instead of final.
The way Solove uses credibility is this article is presented well the quotes he uses are from
trusted and know people and also stays relevant to major topic of the article.
In conclusion, ethos, pathos and logos are needed when writing about something from a
argumentative point of view. They are needed because they add Credibilit, Emotion and Logic.
Daniel J. Soloves presents the three of these well in The End of Privacy?. Examples of how he
uses Ethos, Pathos and Logo include, the sources and quotes used, The star wars kid for emotion,
and the fast facts for logic to back up his argument.
