1. When did the modern idea that mental disorders were diseases not spiritual afflictions
begin?
Began to shape during the 19th century.
2. Why was Elizabeth Packard committed to an asylum?
Committed as insane because she didnt agree with the religious belief of her husband.
3. What was Sigmund Freud's contribution to mental illness treatment?
Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis, a set of psychological and therapeutic treatments.
Freud was the person to found that the people who living an abnormal life, is not because of
stress. Its because there are different disorder in different people.
4. What types of drugs were introduced in the 1950's to treat mental illness?
Chlorpromazine , antipsychotic, and antidepressant drug as well.
5. What did Dr. Thomas Szasz think about mental illness?
Dr. Thomas Szasz thinks that there is no such things as mental illness, people are trying to get a
free ride, and think that people are just acting.
6. What were some of the issues surrounding closing asylums?
There were world campaign to replace asylums with smaller day hospital and halfway house. But
the difficulty was that it was easier to close the asylums than making a halfway house and
hospitals.
7. How were antidepressant drugs discovered?
Drug company in Europe was studying about the patient with schizophrenia in some private
hospital, and when one of the researcher try that drugs to prevent depression, it actually works
and started to change the behavior.

8. What seems to drive the modern social view of mental illness?


Making of new drug development, and research about brain has drive the modern social view of
mental illness.
9. Why are there disagreements about the perception and opinions about mental illness?
Because there is no specific causes for the mental illness, also different people with different
types of mental illness has changed the way of looking in a specific topics.
10. What two things define us as humans that mental illness can destroy?
Loving and working can define us as humans that mental illness can destroy.
