Case study # 30
Diagnosis and Explanation
Brian is afflicted with Dissociative Identity Disorder. This is evident in the behavior he exhibits.
He has two distinct personality states, Brian, a mild mannered young adult, and Suzy, a high
school dancer. Brian experiences some amnesia, he wakes up at times with no memory of why
he is wearing strange clothes. This black out like behavior is a common symptom of DID.
Behavioral Therapies
A cognitive behavioral approach that is often used is to allow the patient to communicate with
their alters, and attempts to find better strategies for coping to stress than switching.
Relaxation exercises are used, and the therapist should model an appropriate relationship, and
appropriate reactions to crises.
Cognitive Therapies
A cognitive therapy to help treat dissociative identity disorder could be talk therapy or
psychotherapy. Therapists will try to make their patients relationships with others better, and try
to help their patient feel comfortable with feelings they haven't felt before or have been
uncomfortable with. Another cognitive therapy to treat DID is clinical hypnosis, this helps people
relax, concentrate, and let them explore their thoughts and feeling they didnt know about.

Group Therapies
Most people feel very alone when it comes to having Dissociative Identity Disorder. Because of
this, it is very helpful for people who have this disorder to meet with others who have it. This can
help them in two major ways. The first is that they find out that there are others who are in a
similar circumstance that they can relate to. The second is that they can learn from others
experiences and how they live in day to day life.
Biological Treatments
No medicine is given directly to treat DID but people that suffer from DID usually suffer from
anxiety and depression, so these people are usually given antidepressants and antianxiety
medications.
Case study #38
Diagnosis and Explanation
Samantha is afflicted with post-traumatic stress disorder. I would diagnose her with this because
after experiencing a terrifying event she has experienced frequent nightmares and flashbacks.
Behavioral Therapies

The best type of therapy to treat PTSD is cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive processing
therapy and prolonged exposure therapy are the two popular ones used today. CPT gives you
new ways to deal with your thoughts and feelings, and this helps you overcome these traumatic
events. PE helps you take on activities and situations you have been avoiding, and tries to
make you comfortable with these events.

Group Therapies
Meeting with a group of people and a counselor can help a lot. Meeting with other people who
know what your talking about, and have experienced similar things can help a person cope with
their disorder.
Biological Treatments
No medication used directly for PTSD but medicines such as Zoloft, Xanax, Prozac, and Paxil
are used to treat the depression and anxiety that come with PTSD.
Case study #39
Diagnosis and Explanation
Don is afflicted with bipolar disorder. I would diagnose him because the behavior he exhibits
matches the described symptoms of bipolar disorder. He experiences periods of mania, where
he gambles, behaves promiscuously, and feels he cannot lose. He also experiences periods of
depression where he cannot get out of bed and feels that life is without purpose.
Behavioral Therapies
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of psychotherapy used to help people with bipolar
disorder. Talking about the behavior that causes this person stress, and problems, and talking
about and fixing these behaviors.
Cognitive Therapies
Psychotherapy or talk therapy really helps bipolar disorder. You sit down and talk about your
thought and feeling with a counselor. This will help you maintain good relationships, resolve
problems at school or work, etc.
Group Therapies
Bipolar disorder can make you feel isolated at times, and this is why joining a support group
would be a good idea, you can sit down and talk about your thoughts and feelings with people
who are in similar or maybe even the same situation as you.

Biological Treatments
Bipolar disorder is treated with three different categories or medications; mood stabilizers,
antidepressants, and antipsychotics. The medicines help people with bipolar disorder cope with
all of the problems that come with this disorder.
Case study #40
Diagnosis and Explanation
Simba is afflicted with generalized anxiety disorder. This is because the behavior he exhibits
matches the description of generalized anxiety disorder, that of severe ongoing anxiety that
interferes with daily activities. He experiences constant uneasiness, even during weekends and
while he is on vacation, there is no apparent cause for the anxiety, leading me to diagnose him
with generalized anxiety disorder.
Behavioral Therapies
Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most widely used therapy for people with generalized
anxiety disorder. This therapy involves your negative patterns, thoughts, and behaviors. The
behavioral part of this therapy deals with how you behave and react in the situations that cause
your anxiety.

cognitive part of this therapy is looking at the person's negative thoughts that contribute to their
anxiety.
Group Therapies
Meeting with groups of people that suffer from this same disorder will help you to understand
that you're not the only one, and will let you communicate with people that have the same
experiences as you.
Biological Treatments
Antidepressants are generally the medicine used to help treat generalized anxiety disorder.
Such medicines include Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil.
