This lesson will focus on the teaching of finding equivalent fractions.

Students will be paired up to work on identifying fractions that are
equivalent to a half. Students will be instructed to use Kidspiration on
the ipads . Teacher will monitor and evaluate students progress
throughout the duration of the lesson.

Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract

fractions.
1.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators
(including mixed
numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in
such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of
fractions
with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 =
23/12. (In
general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

Learning
Objectives

Students will participate in interactive note taking at the beginning

of the lesson.

Students will work in pairs to find equivalent fractions, then to

add and subtract fractions with same denominators applying the
rules discussed during the interactive note taking using the
Smart Board.

Students will apply their knowledge on adding and subtracting

fractions using the iPads to access Kidspiration as a review in
preparation for their upcoming assessment.

Assessment

Students will be able to pair up and work together to find equivalent

fractions, and to practice adding and subtracting fractions with same
denominator. In order to participate in creating a visual, they will use
Kidspiration by signing in to their iPads and get on the Kidspiration to
map a visual that help them review finding equivalent fractions and
addition and subtractions of fractions with different dinominators.

Fractions Manipulatives

iPads (Kidspiration app)

Students will interactively take notes and find equivalent fractions

as the teacher models examples of finding equivalent fractions.

Students will independently take turns in solving an examples in

their interactive notes while the teacher monitors student progress
and provides helps for those who are struggling.

Students will be randomly called to board in order to teach the

class how they solved the examples given in their notes.

Students will sign in to their iPads and get on the Kidspiration to

review the steps they need in finding equivalent fractions
involving addition and subtraction of fractions with same
denominators. This program is a great tool that allows students to

Exit Ticket will be given on the third day of the lesson. This is an
evaluation tool used by teachers in order to assess students
understanding of the concept taught. The Exit Ticket consists of no more
than 3 math problems involving the main concept taught to them. This
assessment tool will allow the teacher to see if students are mastering the
lesson or if re-teaching has to be done before moving on to the next
concept.
