Topic/Objective:

Name: Hugo Bustamante

Macromolecules

Class/Period: Bio/P5
Date: 10/25/15

Essential Question: How can we investigate the structure and function of biomolecules and the role they play in life
Questions:
What is the job of a
protein?
Why do we need
nucleic acids?
What do lipids
have?
What is the
structure of a
carbohydrate?
What do all these
macromolecules
have in common?

Notes:
Macromolecules
- Carbon can bond with many elements(Hydrogen, Oxygen,
Phosphorus, Sulfur, & Nitrogen)
- Carbohydrates: Main source of energy
- Lipids: Store energy
- Nucleic Acids: Genetic info
- Proteins: Control the rate of reactions and regulate call
processes

Carbohydrates
- Structure: CHO(Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen) and is ring
shaped
- Monomer: Monosaccharide
- Functions: Main source of energy

Lipids
- Structure: CHO(Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen) and is mostly C
&H
- Monomer: Fatty Acid Tails and Glycerol
- Function: Long term stored energy, makes hormones, and
cholesterol

Summary: What I learned this week is that there are many macromolecules. Also that all macromolecules have
many elements to them. Like how nucleic acids contain of 5 carbon sugars, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen
base. Also how the structure of that gas three different parts. Also the similarities and differences of all these
macromolecules.

Questions:

Notes:
Proteins
- Structure: Made of CHON(Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen,
Nitrogen)
- Monomer: Amino Acid
- Function: Makes enzymes, and builds/ repairs the body

Nucleic Acids
- Structure: Made of CHONP(Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen,
Nitrogen, Phosphorus)
- Monomer: Nitrogen Base, 5 Carbon Sugar, Phosphate Group
- Function: Store & transmit genetic info(DNA & RNA)
