Progressivism Unit: Reforming Society

Lesson 4- Research Project
Readiness
1. Goals/Objectives/Standards
a. Goals: The students should be able to identify and explain the various events, people, reforms, and
terms that are important aspects of the Progressive era of United States History. They will also be
able to explain how these reforms impact the United States today.
b. Objectives: The students will spend the next three classes in the library doing research on their
progressive reformer/reform and putting together a presentation to present to the class.
c. Standards: USH.3.2 Explain the origins, goals, achievements, and limitations of the Progressive
Movement in addressing political, economic, and social reform. (Government; Economics;
Individuals, Society, and Culture) ISTE Standards: 1-4, 6
1. Anticipatory Set: We will discuss the requirements of the research project. Things like plagiarism, citing
sources, and the kind of sources they need to find for their presentation. Simply copying and pasting info
from websites will not be acceptable work.
2. Purpose: So you know what you are supposed to be doing to complete the project correctly.
Plan for Instruction
1. Adaptations: The students will be assigned to groups of different performance levels, and no one student
will be allowed to do the whole project. Each group member will be given a specific role to fill to give
each student guidance throughout the project. Throughout the project, my student-tutor and I will be able
to assist the students throughout the lesson. Each student will also be given a sheet with their
responsibilities and a rubric to help guide them throughout the project.
2. Lesson Presentation: At the beginning of the period (If not done in the previous class) the students will be
put into groups of 4 and a topic of research. Then the students will choose specific roles to perform
throughout the project. Then we will go down to the library to begin their research.
3. Check for Understanding: While the students work on their projects, I will go around to the groups and
make sure that the students know what they are doing and what their roles are.
4. Review Learning Outcomes: The students will keep their work in their Google Classroom allowing me to
check their work each day.
5. Independent Practice: Each student has their own role to perform for the group.
Plan for assessmentFormative Assessment: I will be able to check and observe the students work as I circulate around the library,
and when they save their work on Google Classroom.
Summative Assessment: The students will be graded on their finished PowerPoint.
Reflection and Post-lesson analysis

How many students achieved the lesson objectives? For those who did not, why not?
What were my strengths and weaknesses?
How would I pace it differently?
Were all students actively participating? If not, why not?
What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?

the researchers and overseer finds to create the final product of your groups research.
Research Guide- The following should be covered by the research.
1. What is the background of your topic? (Who is the person you are discussing about? What was going on
to cause the reform?)
2. What did your topic try to do? Why was it important? (What reforms did your person fight for? What
was the reform meaning to do?)
3. How successful was your person or reform? (Did the person or reform achieve its goal or did they/it fail
to change anything?)
4. Did your reform/reformer change life for us today? Why or why not? (If it did, how has it changed life
