M-1-5

I learned through reading books. The textbooks and some articles that I have read for
my assignment that needs research about the latest trend in dealing with mental
health illness. Getting more into depth knowledge for example with schizophrenia. I
was more refreshed with all the facts about the illness. The new DSM-V that is used
now wherein I was more familiar with the DSM IV from before. It is good to know
all these changes through reading and getting more updated to create a better care
plan and approach that I will use as a nurse.
I remember that as a nurse we always treat a person as a whole being. They have
three theories for most of the illness its the biological, psychological and social
Theories. The assessment they always do is biological, psychological, mental and
spiritual wherein the nurse always looks in all aspects. Some people or relatives of a
person dealing with a mental illness may say that they do not understand what it
happening to the patient. Nurses should have an idea how to explain it to their
relatives and help them with their concerns. It is good to know that information from
the family as it will also be a data for the initial assessment.
Good. As a nursing student and have not been in the real scenario, I was able to
apply the knowledge that I have on the scenarios from my exams on how to
approach and deal with the problem. I know building rapport to the person is the
most important step if you want to have a therapeutic relationship and work things
out with the client.

I will incorporate all that I have learned in in my daily routine as a person and as a
nurse. For me learning about mental health is not just for work, you can use it in
your everyday life. I might encounter some people who would joke about suicidal
ideation and that person might seem normal to other persons. That person might
want to talk about anything happening in his/her life. Just listen to their concerns and
sometimes for some people to just vent out whatever they feel inside is enough and
makes them better. For my future nursing practice, having the knowledge how the
illness works will help me if I am in a situation, how to deal with it and make a good
care plan for the better of the patient.
