Sample Unit Plan: Shopping at the Market
Day 1 of Unit
Objective:
SWBAT identify, write, and pronounce Spanish vocabulary for typical foods found
at a supermarket.
SWBAT understand and apply the vocabulary in conversation.
Context/Theme:
- Through a prompt in the Do Now, students will independently think about
the foods they typically see/purchase in supermarkets.
- DN Prompt: Copy down the vocabulary words in Spanish and in English.
Do you purchase any of these items in your neighborhood grocery store?
- The vocabulary will continue to be practiced through conversation about
an animal that is thinking about a certain food.
- Picture: Bear thinking about a bag of rice.
- Students will engage with food vocabulary through their knowledge of
animal vocabulary and ability to work with questions using the verbs tener
and querer.
- Questions Asked: El oso tiene arroz? El oso tiene frutas? El oso
quiere arroz? El osso quiere frutas o arroz? Qu quiere el oso?

Goal 2: Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures
Goal 4: Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Cultures
Standards:
- 1.1 Engage in conversation about items in supermarket.

around supermarket vocabulary.
- 2.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the
perspectives and practices of cultures studied and use this knowledge to
interact effectively in cultural contexts.
Grammar Addressed:
- Present tense conjugation of tener in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person.
- Present tense conjugation of querer in the 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd person.
Vocabulary Addressed:
- Quiero, quieres, quiere, tengo, tienes, tiene
- Comida, frutas, vegetales, leche, zumo, carne, pollo, arroz, pan

located in a market.
SWBAT understand and apply the vocabulary in conversation using me gusta.
Context/Theme:
- Through a prompt in the Do Now, students will independently think about
the items they typically see/purchase in supermarkets.
- DN Prompt: Copy down the vocabulary words in Spanish and in English.

- The vocabulary will continue to be practiced through conversation about a
person that is thinking about a certain item in a supermarket.
- Picture: Man thinking about a cash register.
- Students will engage with vocabulary through their ability to work with
questions using the verbs gustarse, hay and tener.
- Questions Asked: Hay un supermercado? Hay un estacionamiento?
Hay un cajero? El hombre tiene un cajero? El hombre tiene un cajero
o un supermercado? Te gusta ir de compras? Al hombre, le gusta ir de
compras?
