Grade:5

Activity: Art: 3D Hand Time:

Goals/Key Questions

Goals:
Students will learn how to represent their hand in a 3D way using
straight and convex lines
Objective (Program of Studies):
Component 7: Emphasis: Students will create emphasis through
the use of structural devices and strategies.
C) Rhythmic feature can lead the eye to the dominant area in a
composition
D) Arrangements of forms into shapes and patterns can tighten a
design, direct attention, and hold interest in a composition.
Component 8: Unity: Students will create unity by integrating the
parts of a composition into the whole.
C) Transitions of color, texture, or tone relate the parts of a
composition to a unified whole.
Use drawing tools to make a variety of shapes and
structures extending beyond previous levels to exploring
and enclosing forms, active and passive forms, concave,
convex forms, concentric and branching structures

Pre-Lesson Considerations
Lesson overview of main ideas to be learned and pre-learning
required:
Students are going to draw a 3D Hand

needed (seating arrangement):
Smartboard Lesson
Paper
Ruler
Markers
Sharpie
Example

Content:

Include what the teacher is doing (key questions, logistics, key

concepts that will be addressed, methods of formative assessment) as
well as what the students are doing.

Show students example of 3D hand art.

Explain how to make it:
1. Trace hand with a pencil lightly
2. With a ruler, measure in 1-4cm increments up the side
of the page and do the same on the other side.
3. Using your ruler, draw a straight line across, skipping
when you go over the hand
(Sharpie or pencil first???)
4. Inside the hand, draw a convex line connecting the two
straight lines
Pick your colours to fill in the sections. Make sure to
follow carefully so it lines up
To make it look more 3D, you may shade it in.
Pick a border
Write criteria on the board.
1. Straight lines measured with a ruler at 1-4 cm wide.
2. Convex lines inside the hand connecting the straight
lines
3. Coloured
Clean up and put name on
