atmosphere of the game.
Overall the game is a chaotic life of a student. It is quite entertaining with
daydreams of anteaters and avoiding fun enemies such as evil squirrels,.
Cutscenes are between levels to explain the story of the game as well as to
guide the player.
Example: Cutscene before the virus attack has a classmate sneezing on
the protagonist. Then depending on the outcome of that level if player wins,
a healthy protagonist scene is played and the player may proceed.
However, if player loses the infected scene is played and it is game
over.

Purpose/application
This game is education with a health twist. The Focus Frenzy teaches the
players that even though students life is full of chaos, he or she must get
their priorities straight in order to succeed. The health twist is when the
player plays the shield of the immune system to protect the body from
being infected by the nasty virus.
Premise/high concept
You as a student get caught up in daydreams and you have to straighten
your priorities in order to pass your final exam.
Genre
The genre for this game is a platformer. In each level, the player has to go
across an environment in order to reach the goal of the level while avoiding
various obstacles. The goals for each level vary so no level platformer is
the exact same as the others. In Level 1, the player has to collect the
balloons and avoid the enemies. In Level 2, the player has to reach the end
of the level while collecting black ants and avoid falling into red ant nests.
Level 3 is race between the player and a virus NPC. The goal for this level
is to be the first one to reach the portal at the end of the level. Level 4
involves the player collecting tennis balls and avoiding giant squirrels.
Lasty, Level 5 has the player avoid the gaps and enemies as the player
reaches the top while collecting final exam papers.
Style
This game is going to have a cartoon esthetic. Since the game is tailored
towards most age groups, it would be suitable to have a game style such
as this to appeal to this wide of an audience. The style is going to be
reflection of the game since there will not be mature situations. This design
will convey a fun and upbeat mood throughout with its use of bright colors
instead of using dark colors that would make it more of a somber tone.
Platform

Team Dreamerz 3

Focus Frenzy is going be only on PC platforms. With a PC platform, the

game will be accessible to most people since having computer is a
necessity now a days.
Audience/market The target audience for this game is preteens to young
adults. The preferable age range would be 12 to 30 years old. This
particular audience market would relate to this game more than any other
audience because this time, they have experienced difficulty with school at
this time in their life like the protagonist of the game.
Rating
While the game features and is geared toward college students, we expect
it will be rated E for everyone, as there are no adult themes.
Player mode
This will be a single player game.
Time interval
Each level must be completed in a certain amount of time. Students
generally do not have a lot of time to complete assignments.
Backstory
This game is about our protagonist, a student, and his struggles to focus
through school and pass his classes, along with all the other
responsibilities a student has. The game starts with him in class, as he is
having trouble focusing on the lesson. He starts to doze off, and the game
begins.
Character descriptions: There are a few characters the player takes
control of throughout the game. Some of these are:
Student - This is the main character, a person who struggles with school.
They are a college student with a final exam coming up, but finds it difficult
to focus and keep their priorities and responsibilities straight. However, they
are determined to succeed.

Competitive analysis: There are two games that are similar in some way
to Focus Frenzy:
Super Mario Bros.
Sometimes different objectives in each level
character transformation

Kirby
same character with different appearances/abilities
agender main character
character transformation
Our game however also educates its audience about prioritizing and
focusing, whereas the competitors have no educational goals.

Rules
A single player moves across a level, jumping to avoid obstacles and pits,
to accomplish a specific goal before time runs out. In some levels, this
means collecting all of the items strewn about the stage, and in others it
means reaching the end of the stage or an object. If the player runs into an
enemy, their health will deplete, and if they lose all of their health the game
will end. This same principle applies to the timer reaching zero.
Challenges
To win, the player must avoid several kinds of obstacles. For example,
falling into a pit, losing all of the protagonists health or allowing the timer to
reach zero results in a game over. The enemies, which deplete health, and
collectables, which are needed to win in some situations, vary by stage. (ie.
in one level, the protagonist is daydreaming an anteater, so the goal is
collect all of the black ants while avoiding red ant nests, in another level the
player takes control of the protagonists dog and must collect tennis balls
while avoiding squirrels, etc.)

Strategies (per level):

level 1: collect good balloons while avoiding enemies and pits.
level 2: collect black ants while moving from platform to platform and
avoiding red ant areas.
level 3: keep the virus from reaching the goal.
level 4: collect tennis balls and avoid squirrels.
level 5: reach the top of the course while avoiding gaps and enemies
Perspective/game view

Team Dreamerz 6

Focus Frenzy will have a third person view from the side. For example,
when the level begins, the player will be seeing the right side of the
characters body while they are facing left.

User interface
The player will click buttons with the mouse for navigation on the following
areas: main menu, options menu, credits screen, game over screen, and
multiple instructions screen.
The general controls the player will have throughout all 5 levels levels are
as follows: move character with arrow keys, and space bar to make the
character jump.
The HUD will show the protagonists health and the amount of time left in
the level. [See the above sketch.]

Audio

Assets
The game assets will be all hand drawn. The game assets such as models
and sprites include: protagonist, virus, immune system shield, dog,
anteater, enemies, collectables, etc. Also the background and all the
cutscenes will be hand drawn as well. For the script we will research on
the internet to give us an idea of what code we need to create a functional
game. The sounds for the game we will attain from our computers as wells
as online.
Tutorial
The tutorials that we are following are the ones that were taught in class
from a book as well as online on www.lynda.com and

Milestones
Board game: First version of the game, helps picture how the game is
going to run
Stills of each level: First build of each level completed, better understanding
of everyones level.
Basic mechanics (movement, jumping, collision): Foundation of the game,
basic gameplay done
All sprites done: All art is done, can now fill in the game.
Level transition: Puts the game together, creates a final product.
Risk analysis
Conflicting group member schedules
We may be unable to get together, due to differing class and school
schedules.
Picking a certain time(s) that match up with our schedules in order to
properly maximize time.
Clashing art styles
Could make the game look less cohesive
Make sure that we have a definitive art style.
Level transitions
Its hard to find a good connection between levels, both stylistically and
functionally.

b. Plan how to make the levels as cohesive as possible and ensure that
programming is correct.
Future updates
Future updates could include a choice of a co-op mode. Also, more levels
with chaotic daydreams. Another update could be choosing your own
daydream, (mini game). Furthermore, other updates could include more
difficult objectives for pre-existing levels to challenge players and a patch to
fix bugs in the previous version of the game.
