Allworksheetswillbeprojectedfrommylaptoptothescreenontheboard.Eachworksheetwill
beshownandexplainedbeforethestudentsbegin.Thiswillallowforthestudentstohaveaclear
understandingoftheirexpectations.Afterexplainingeachworksheet,studentswillhavethe
opportunitytoaskanyclarifyingquestionsbeforebeginningtowork.
ThemusicvideoofElectricLovewillbeplayedfromYoutube.
Theconnotativelanguagegamewillbecreatedingooglepresentationandpresentedontheboard
forstudentstofollowalongwith.
LyricswillbetakenfromAZLyrics.comandwillbehandedouttothestudentsastheylistento
thesong.
Anonlinecountdowntimerwillalsobeutilizedandpresentedonthefrontoftheboard.Thiswill
beusedwhilestudentsfillinworksheetssotheyhaveaclearvisualofhowmuchtimetheyhave
tofulfilltheirexpectations.

Rationale:
Theintentbehindthislessonistoallowstudentstocontinuetheirpracticewithfigurative
language,whileanalyzingtheconnotativelanguageaswell.Studentswilltakealookatanewtopsong,
ElectricLove.Atthebeginningofclass,studentswillbegivenananticipationguidefortheconnotative
languagelesson.Studentswillhavealistofwords,wheretheyarerequiredtowritewhetherornotthe

wordhasapositiveornegativeconnotation,andwhattypesoffeelingsthewordevokes.Thisismeantto
introducestudentstoconnotativelanguage.Adiscussionwillbeheldaftertoclarifytheunderstandingof
connotativelanguage.Studentswillthenparticipateinaconnotativelanguagegame.Thestudentswillbe
givenawordwithanegativeconnotation,andwillhavetothinkasmanywordsastheycanwithrelative
definitionsthathavepositiveconnotation.Studentswillberequiredtowritetheiranswersonthewhite
boards.Afterthegame,studentswillwatchandfollowalongwiththelyricstoElectricLove.Asa
class,thestudentsandIwillannotatethesongtoidentifyitsfigurativelanguage,theme,andconnotative
language.ThestudentsandIwillalsocreateaTchart,wheretheywillcomparethenegativeconnotative
languageinAdelessongtothepositiveconnotativelanguageinBornssong.Studentswillthenutilize
therestofclasswheretheywillfillinaworksheetidentifyingfigurativelanguage,theme,and
connotativelanguageinBornssong.

Procedures/Instruction
1. [10minutes]Uponenteringtheclassroom,studentswillbegivenanentranceslipwherethey
identifywhetherwordshavepositiveornegativeconnotations.Thiswillleadintothediscussion
ofconnotativelanguage,andstudentswillsharetheiranswers.
2. [15minutes]StudentswillbebrokenintoteamstoplayaConnotativeLanguageGame.
3. [5minutes]ListentoBornsElectricLove.
4. [15minutes]AnnotatethelyricsasaclasstoElectricLove.Studentswilladdtotheir
annotationsbycreatingatchartthatcomparesAdelesconnotativelanguagetoBorns
connotativelanguage.
5. [35minutes]Studentswillusetheremainderofclasstocompletelyfinishtheirworksheet.Ifthe
studentsfinishearlyandhaveextratime,theywillbeencouragedtothinkaboutthesongthat
theywillbeutilizingfortheirselfselectedsonganalysis.
