Post photo of student work on the smart board. Encourage


students to respectfully read the comic. Comment briefly on the
relevance to the math curriculum.
Hands up if you have ever heard the term prime before.
Composite. Factor.
Please put your hand up and tell the class where you have
heard these terms before. Tell us the definition of the term if you
know it. *Refer to smart-board slide for terms.
Students will be asked to write examples of prime and
composite numbers on the board in the spaces provided.
Tell brief story about a student that thinks of composite
numbers as garbage numbers. Take note of whether or not
this analogy is helpful for students.

Instructions:
1.You will receive a number that will be taped to your back
2.You will spread yourselves out between the two
classrooms
3.Silently, you will organize yourselves into two categories:
prime and composite
a. Help your classmates decide which category
they will be in
b. Do not talk or write to communicate (you may
use hand gestures)
4. You will have 10 minutes
*If students are not willing to follow rules, shut down the activity.

What did we learn? smart-board slide. Fill in with


student ideas.
This is one of my favourite outcomes in math. I love
to teach it and I think it is very fun to play with
numbers in this way.
Try to come to class next day with some more
examples of prime and composite numbers. Try to
find ones that are interesting or weird.
Next class we will be learning about factor trees.
