The American with Disabilities Act and Online Instruction Discussion
According to adata.org, The American with Disabilities Act is a civil rights law that prohibits
discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs,
schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.
This makes sure that people with disabilities are treated equally and are not withheld from
opportunities and services due to discrimination.
According to section508.gov, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to require Federal agencies to
make their electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible to people with disabilities
Under Section 508, agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access
to information that is comparable to access available to others. This means that people with
disabilities must be able to access the same information as easily as those without disabilities.

RE: The American with Disabilities Act and Online Instruction Discussion
I think these laws are great, and they have such a great purpose in helping people with all
sorts of disabilities. I am glad we have the technology to research these ACTS so that we are
aware of what can't happen.

ADA and Section 508

12/14/2015 1:13:25 PM

Before researching the American with Disabilities Act or the Section 508, I had no clue what
they were. After I did some research I found that the ADA covers many laws and regulations
that are meant to ensure that Americans with disabilities have equal access to all the things
that Americans without disabilities enjoy, as well as protections against discrimination in
employment, access to education, and access to public facilities. Though most discrimination
against individuals with disabilities is not intended, it is wrong, and the government attempts
to address these issues through the ADA and its updates. Also, Section 508 is specifically
concerned with access to electronic information about government programs, facilities, and
services for civilians and government employees. It seems reasonable to expect that an
individual with disabilities should be able to access this information equally as well as those
without disabilities. Yet, this not always happens. Without the law, people without disabilities
would likely never think about these things and end up discriminating unintentionally against
citizens with disabilities. These laws are beneficial for those people that have disabilities.

I felt that I was in the same boat as you but I new I had heard the words before. When I
found the government site that discussed ADA I began to realize that this is something I have
been a part of in a sense. I think without some of these laws and the technology to research
them people with disabilties would not know what is available to them.

ADA
The American Disability Act gives civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities. This
may deal with hiring and firing special needs persons from their job based on their
disabilities. http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/hq9805.html At this website it tells
a great deal about the ADA and what it means for employment, public accommodations,
transportation in the many sectors, and telecommunication services.
