Family~INSTITUTIONS ANALYSIS

By: Kailey Henderson

Main Focuses: single parent families, Foster children, and

the balance of family and work
History Of Family:
Families are culturally different from one another and that
vary with their social ladder standings.

The balance between work and family life

As it is stated in the graph to
the right, balancing work and
raising family is much harder
for the mother than the father.
This is due to the fact that the
mother (and there are
statistics to prove it) is more
involved in the growing up of
her children.

How can one improve the balance?

A parent that works need to revisit their schedule and needs
to ensure that they are reserving the weekends for their
family. They also need to manage their procrastination
because getting work done faster means more time for family.

How do families assimilate into culture?

Families assimilating into a culture definitely perceive
themselves as different. However, they still maintain their
traditions of their old culture. In "Unpacking the
Balikbayan Box" is a pure example of how a move doesn't
force families to lose their existing traditions. A Filipino
family that recently moved to America still hangs on to
their traditions.

The change of Families over time

It is weird to think that families have been here forever so
how do they change. Shouldnt they already be accustomed to
the world? Well, the people in society are constantly
changing. For example, it has become more and more common
than having two parents and the household of a single-parent
are usually more stressful and overwhelming since one person
has to provide everything for their children. Children are
generally more anxious.

Single Parent Affect on Children

In this graph it is very notable

that the mothers who take care
of their children and have
never been married succeed
the least.

Socialism and Family

Just by the sound of it is is easy to realize that there is
a difficulty to balance the two. How do you have a lot of
money while having a healthy family? Children are so
expensive! It is a constant struggle balancing capitalism
and family life and it is almost impossible to have both.

Foster families

Foster familes, as shown in the ABC Family hit TV

show The Fosters, is something that our society
really needed. It gives the children who come from
broken homes a second chance at life. For example,
of 254,114 who exited foster care in 2010, 51% were
reunited with parents or caretakers.

Functionalist Analysis:
Functionalists believe that families need to have a set of
norms to live by and then this will create their social
status. The families along with the other institutions work
together to help maintain and balance social order.
Everything that a family does reflects its shape, how it is
structured and how others view them. There are many
necessary functions of society that the family performs.

Conflict Analysis:
There is reassurance of social inequality based on the
different families economic inequality and the different
ways people perceive them. Many problems of families arise
from the inequality of society.
