Technology in Teaching

Third Grade Math Lesson: Plickers were used to quickly gather pre-assessment data
and formative assessment data throughout a unit on measurement.

Fourth Grade Science Lesson: Relationships among the Earth, Moon, and Sun
For this lesson, I included technology in order to grab the students attention and
provide a hook for the content of the lesson. After briefly reviewing what students
already knew about solar systems, I displayed an interactive solar system found at
http://www.kidsastronomy.com/solar_system.htm on the board. This
depicts the motion of the sun and the earth along with the other planets. The earth is
shown rotating on its axis while revolving around the sun counterclockwise. These
simultaneous motions may be challenging for students to comprehend without a visual
depiction. Showing the motion of the planets around the sun would benefit all students,
but would especially provide support for ESL students, giving them that visual support
for learning. Students then had the chance to make observations about what they were
seeing.

Second Grade Social Studies Lesson: Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Papyrus

In this lesson, I incorporated the use of technology to project a vibrant image of
an Ancient Egyptian scene onto the board. With the use of the projector, I was able to

make the image large enough for the students to make some critical observations,
investigations, and predictions about the symbols and pharaohs shown. This Visual
Discovery technique causes the students to examine the entire photo, coming up with
questions they may have about the image and making detailed observations about what
they notice and any connections they have to prior knowledge about the subject. The
image I projected is found at http://www.maxmidgett.com/HGD_2/wpcontent/flagallery/chapter-1-the-invention-of-writing/19_papyrus.jpg.

Third Grade Social Studies Lesson: Ancient Roman Architecture

The use of a PowerPoint presentation in this architecture lesson provided students
with immediate pictures and examples of architecture as they were first learning about
the key features seen in the Ancient Roman architecture. The following image is one of
the slides from the PowerPoint presentation in which I included another Visual Discovery
for students to critically analyze and practice describing what they are observing in the
images. Students make clear visual connections to the content as they are learning about
the architecture, instead of simply hearing direct instruction orally without anything to
anchor it in their minds. This also supports a diverse classroom of ESL students and
students at varying levels of readiness to learn.

Fourth Grade Math Lesson: Point, Line, Ray, Parallel lines, and Perpendicular lines
The use of a SMART Board presentation with Math can be especially helpful
because students are able to come up to the board and interact with the content with the
support of the teacher and their classmates before moving on to independent work. I used
a SMART Board lesson to allow students to draw the new mathematical symbols they
were learning.
Second Grade Social Studies Lesson: Ancient Egyptian Pyramids
For this lesson, a Google Maps tour of the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx in
Egypt was given. Rather than just showing students a picture of the pyramids, they were
able to gain even more perspective with the Google Maps experience. We could zoom in
and more closely examine the real life images that Google Maps provides.
