Diversity Plan for A University Athletic Department

There are multiple aspects to diversity, which are race, color, religion, national origin,
sex, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, gender identity
and expression, marital status and economic condition. We all contribute to diversity by
which we are and each of us has a role in building up the diversity around us. We can
help our athletic department grow as we engage and interact with one another, while
understanding the value of identities and differences that make each one of us unique. In
order to realize fully our mission and vision on diversity, it is necessary to take steps to
promote successful outcomes:
Goal 1: Enrich the student athletes attitudes for diversity and inclusion
Hold structured focus groups as a safe space for tough discussions on diversity.
Foster in common understanding of and commitment to diversity.
Routinely update policies to maintain fairness, consistency and compliance with
student athletes.
Diversity workshops presented by the athletic department to all athletes and
coaches.
Goal 2: Provide education and training on diversity to new faculty, staff and students:
Orientation for new faculty and staff that provides a message on diversity,
inclusivity and equity within the athletic department. Include scenarios that will
address how to handle sensitive issues while creating a healthy environment.
Provide workshops on diversity that address the prevention of sexual harassment
and discrimination. Include the program for all student athletes, coaches and
faculty within the department.
Strengthen current programs and design and implement new programs to support
the faculty, mentoring, peer evaluations, and opportunities for professional
development on and off=campus and ensure availability of programs, especially
for women, people of color, and members of other underrepresented groups.
Increase opportunities for professional development and career advancement of
faculty.
Goal 3: Strengthen Recruitment, Retention, and Achievement
Strengthen recruitment of faculty of color and underrepresented individuals.
o Design and implement a retention program that fits the profile and needs
of faulty.
o Engage diverse students and alumni in targeting recruitment through
educational and service opportunities, such as internships within the
athletic department.

Goal 4: Enhance training programs on diversity and civil rights laws:


Support and expand on-going workshops and trainings for the university
community.
Notify the faulty on workshops being offered related to diversity
Goal 5: Increase awareness; build mutually rewarding relationships with staff members
within the department from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences
