1. Print two sets of the words on the following pages, and print each set on a different colored
paper/cardstock. I usually have a green team and a blue team, so Ill use those colors in this description.
Shuffle up the green stack and the blue stack, keeping the colors separate.
2. Divide your students into two teams, and explain one half will be el equipo verde, while the other will be el
equipo azul. Draw a t-chart on a whiteboard as you explain, and label them verde and azul (use this to keep
track of points).
3. Pass out the green papers to the green team, and the blue papers to the blue team. Have the students
distribute the papers evenly. Depending on how many students you have, each student might have three or
four papers.
4. Explain that you are going to say a sentence in English, and they need to look at their words and see if
they have anything needed to create the Spanish translation. If they have a word, they need to grab it, go to
the front of the room, and form the sentence with their other teammates up there. Point out where in the
room the blue students should form their sentence, and where the green students should form theirs. Also,
explain that they need to have the words in the correct order when theyre in front.
5. Give them an example sentence, such as He has my cat, and explain that students with l, tiene, mi and
gato would race to put their sentence together in front of the room. Tell students to include pronouns in this
game, such as l, nosotros, and yo.
6. Begin the game! Call out the first sentence and award a point to the team who forms theirs first. Feel free
to make the last sentences worth multiple points.
Hints: Make sure there are clear pathways in your room for students to get to the front. Also, you might want
to hint that the words nosotros and tiene will be used often, so students with those words should give their
other words away to teammates, so they just have one word.
Variation: If you have a Smartboard or Doc-cam, project the English sentences on the screen as well as
saying them out loud (just make the font bigger on the next three pages, and make the pages only have one
column). You can also copy and paste the English sentences onto a Powerpoint, with one sentence per page.
