This lesson will be a Science unit on Sea animals and classifying them as
Mammals and Non-Mammals. The lesson will begin by reading, What is a
Mammal? by Bobbie Kalman. Children will learn new vocabulary words as such
as Mammals and Non-Mammals. Students will then recall what we have read
from the text.
A new concept/activity -A conclusion of a concept
Why is there a need for this lesson? This lesson will benefit students to have a
concept of comparing things and identify characteristics that have similarities
and differences.
20 minutes
-Students will observe and identify sea animals that are mammals and nonmammals.

I want my students to learn the basic concept of science terms. As well as gather
and explore information throughout the read aloud and learn to compare and
contrast. I also want my children to ask questions such as what why how. I
also want students to be able to connect the text to self.

The Sea Mammal, Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta
Smart board
We will use the smart board during the lesson to show more images and video
clips on the differences and similarities between mammals and non mammals
To get the childrens attention first we will read books on What is a Mammal?
by Bobbie Kalman. In the beginning of the lesson I will ask question such as Can
you predict what the story is about? or What do YOU think a mammal is based
on the illustration of the book? These questions will be asked for children to
cognitively think. As we look through the book Ill ask the children to point out
any similarities they notice that the mammals have or any differences that they
notice. Because visual is important I will add in additional images and video clip

Extension Activity: After working on sea animals mammal and nonmammals, to extend the activities we will look at animals that live on land. We
will go over the definition of mammal and non-mammals and have images and
video to further their knowledge.
