UNDERSTANDING ALL THE MESSAGES PREACHED FROM 1840-1844

(The Fall of the Ottoman Empire)

(Part 1)
There is great need to search the book ofRevelation, and learn the texts thoroughly, that we may know what is
written.{Ev 363.2}

THE SEVEN TRUMPETS

Revelation 8:2,6
Trumpets = War; God saving us from our enemy(Rome)
Jeremiah 4:19
Numbers 10:9
First Four Trumpets(Revelation 8) = Barbaric tribes against the Armies of Pagan Rome
Last 3 Trumpets, contain woes(Revelation 9) = Islam used as a Scourge against Papal Rome
The first four trumpets deal with the breaking up of western Rome; the last three, with the overthrow of eastern
Rome. {1919 SNH, BHB 120.1}
Under the first four trumpets the two western divisions fell, and under the fifth and sixth the eastern empire was
crushed; but under the seventh trumpet great Babylon entire will sink to rise no more at all{1842 JoL, PREX2 133.1}
The first four trumpets met their fulfillment in the wars of the Goths, Vandals, Huns, etc., which divided Western
Rome into ten parts or kingdoms.{1905 JNL, GSAM 128.1}
While it is true that the first four trumpets mark the downfall of the Western Empire of Rome, it is also true that they
mark the setting up of ten kingdoms that remained, and out of these ten kingdoms have come the nations which
dominate the history of to-day{March 30, 1903 WWP, GCB 4.5}
the first four trumpets relates to four remarkable events which contributed to the downfall of the Roman
empire
THE 3 WOES(Under Trumpets 5th, 6th, and 7th)
Revelation 9:1-21
Star = Angel
Revelation 1:20
Angel = Messenger
Star also = Leader/Person (Genesis 37:9-10)
Bottomless pit = Desolate earth; desolate part of the earth
Abyssos
Genesis 1:2
Smoke = Obscuring light
Light = the Word of God (Psalms 119:105)
The smoke from the "bottomless pit" beclouded the eastern sky, and the consideration of the Eastern Empire
necessitates a study of Mohammedanism instead of Christianity(Seer of Patmos, pg. 192.2)
Sun = Christ; Word of God
Psalms 84:11
Revelation 19:13(see Psalms 119:105)
Locusts = children of the East, Arabs, Islam
Judges 7:12
Exodus 10:4-5,13-15
Grass = Mankind who follow the word of God (Isaiah 40:6)
***continue on next page***

Tree = Obedient to Gods commandments

Psalms 1:1-3
Seal of God = Gods law; Gods Sabbath (this is not the seal vs: the mark of beast (See Ev 613.1)
Isaiah 8:16
Five months = 150 prophetic days; or 150 literal years (Gen 7:11,24; 8:3-4; Num 14:34; Ezek 4:6)
Tail of Scorpions = Lies of Islam teaching that came from the Prophet Mahomet
Isaiah 9:15
Four Angels = Sultans of the 4 parts of the Arab regions
When the sixth angel sounded, a voice was heard, saying, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great
river Euphrates. The river Euphrates must here be taken for a symbol of that kingdom of which it was the
principal river, which was the Ottoman or Turkish Empire. The four angels are supposed to mean the four chief
Sultans of which that Empire was composed. THESE WERE Iconium,
Aleppo, Damascus, and Bagdad. They were loosed so that they should hereafter have not simply the power
of tormenting, but of destroying. This was accomplished by the following events:- {1878 UrS, TBI 264.2}

The people to whom God has entrusted eternal interests, the depositaries of truth pregnant with eternal results, the
keepers of light that is to illuminate the whole world, have lost their bearings(TM 397.1)
All the messages given from 1840-1844 are to be made forcible now, for there are many people who have lost their
bearings. The messages are to go to all the churches. {21MR 437.1}
The prophecy of the first angel's message, brought to view in Revelation 14, found its fulfillment in the Advent
movement of 1840-1844.
To Wm. Miller and his co-laborers it was given to preach the message in America, and the light kindled by their
labors shone out to distant lands(4SP 222.1/.3)
Early Workers to Speak.--God has given me light regarding our periodicals. What is it?--He has said that the dead are
to speak. How?--Their works shall follow them. We are to repeat the words of the pioneers in our work, who knew
what it cost to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, and who labored to lay the foundation of our work. They
moved forward step by step under the influence of the Spirit of God. One by one these pioneers are passing away.
The word given me is, Let that which these men have written in the past be reproduced{CW 28.1}
The record of the experience through which the people of God passed in the early history of our work must be
republished. Many of those who have since come into the truth are ignorant of the way in which the Lord wrought. The
experience of William Miller and his associatesshould be kept before our people. Elder Loughborough's book should
receive attention. Our leading men should see what can be done for the circulation of this book. {CW 145.2}

***We will now learn what gave the impetus to the 3 Angels messages preached between 1840-1844
***What messages prepared the way for the empowerment of the 3 Angels Messages?
Loughborough:
It may be of interest to mention by name some of the men who acted a prominent part with Elder Miller and
Himes in the movement of those early times...
Dr. Josiah Litch, of Philadelphia, who, as we shall see in the following chapter, was moved upon by the Lord to
proclaim a truth that in its fulfillment caused the sudden and rapid development of interest in the advent message.

WHAT WAS THIS TRUTH THAT JOSIAH LITCH PREACHED?

In the year 1840 another remarkable fulfillment of prophecy excited widespread interest. Two years before, Josiah
Litch, one of the leading ministers preaching the second advent, published an exposition of Revelation 9, predicting
the fall of the Ottoman Empire. According to his calculations, this power was to be overthrown "in A.D. 1840,
sometime in the month of August;" and only a few days previous to its accomplishment he wrote: "Allowing the first
period, 150 years, to have been exactly fulfilled before Deacozes ascended the throne by permission of the Turks, and
that the 391 years, fifteen days, commenced at the close of the first period, it will end on the 11th of August, 1840,
when the Ottoman power in Constantinople may be expected to be broken. And this, I believe, will be found to be the
case."--Josiah Litch, in Signs of the Times, and Expositor of Prophecy, Aug. 1, 1840.

At the very time specified, Turkey, through her ambassadors, accepted the protection of the allied powers of
Europe, and thus placed herself under the control of Christian nations. The event exactly fulfilled the prediction. (See
Appendix.) When it became known, multitudes were convinced of the correctness of the principles of prophetic
interpretation adopted by Miller and his associates, and a wonderful impetus was given to the advent movement.
Men of learning and position united with Miller, both in preaching and in publishing his views, and from 1840 to 1844
the work rapidly extended.{GC 334.4-335.1}

THE FALL OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE:

The importance of the prophecy, and the exactness with which it was fulfilled, to the very day, should lead to a
careful investigation of that divine history, which circles about the years 1840 to 1844{1905 SNH, SSP 179.1}

Why Do We Need to Know these Verses in Revelation?
God's Spirit has illuminated every page of Holy Writ, but there are those upon whom it makes little impression,
because it is imperfectly understood. When the shaking comes, by the introduction of false theories, these surface
readers, anchored nowhere, are like shifting sand. They slide into any position to suit the tenor of their feelings of
bitterness. . . .

Loughborough:
The Fifth Trumpet:
The fifth trumpet presents the rise of Mohammedanism with its cloud of errors, but especially the period of "five
months," or one hundred and fifty literal years from the time they "had a king over them." July 27, 1299, Othman, the
founder of the Ottoman empire, invaded the territory of Nicomedia. From that time the Ottomans harassed and
"tormented" the Eastern empire of Rome till July 27, 1449, the one hundred and fifty years of the sounding of the
fifth trumpet. At that time the Turks came with their forces against the city of Constantinople itself, using gunpowder
in their warfare; and from a ponderous cannon, which the historian Gibbon says required sixty oxen to draw, they
fired great rocks against the walls of Constantinople. {1905 JNL, GSAM 128.2}

The Close of the Sixth Trumpet:

About this time John Palleologus, who is set down by historians as the last Greek emperor, died. Constantine Decozes
was the rightful heir to the throne, but it is said that his fears of Amurath, the Turkish sultan, who was waging this
warfare against him, led him to ask permission of Amurath to ascend the throne. Such an act would almost seem a
resignation of the throne to the Turks. In fact, very shortly the Ottomans had possession of the city of Constantinople
and the Eastern empire of Rome. Thus they (politically) "killed" that empire which they had before "tormented." They
were to "slay" it for "an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year." {1905 JNL, GSAM 128.3}
Taking this as prophetic time, a day for a year, how long a time would it be? The problem is a simple one: a year,
360 days, or years; a month, 30 days, or years; and one day, one year,-in all 391 days, or, literally, 391 years. An hour
being the twenty-forth part of a day, as a symbol would be half a month, or fifteen days. The whole time of
Mohammedan independent rule of Eastern Roman territory would therefore be 391 years and 15 days. This added to
July 27, 1449, brings us to August 11, 1840, for the termination of the period of Turkish independence, as set forth
under the sixth trumpet. {1905 JNL, GSAM 129.1}
The Loud Cry of the First Message:
The point of time when the loud cry of this proclamation was to be made is a question of interest. It is here placed
between the sounding of the sixth and seventh trumpets, which may be seen not only by its position in the Scripture
record..." This is conclusive evidence that the time proclaimed in this message extends to the sounding of the seventh
trumpet. {1905 JNL, GSAM 127.2}

The Time of the Loud Cry:

When the seventh angel sounds, we read that "the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his
temple the ark of his testament." In the service of the earthly sanctuary, the apartment containing the ark-the most
holy place-was opened only once a year; that was on the day of atonement, and for the purpose of blotting out sins-the
cleansing of the sanctuary. The time spoken of by the prophets, when this cleansing work, as accomplished by Christ,
should take place, is at the close of the twenty-three hundred days. It is also stated that when the seventh angel
sounds, voices in heaven say that the time is come for the dead to be judged. {1905 JNL, GSAM 127.3}
This prophetic symbol of Revelation 10 presents the time when this message is to go forth "with a loud voice," and
finally, "as when a lion roareth." The time when, according to this prophecy, the message was to increase to its "loud
cry" is from the close of the sixth trumpet to the end of that prophetic period leading to the cleansing of the
sanctuary, in other words, to the end of the twenty-three hundred days. The first four trumpets met their fulfillment in
the wars of the Goths, Vandals, Huns, etc., which divided Western Rome into ten parts or kingdoms. {1905 JNL, GSAM

UNDERSTANDING ALL THE MESSAGES PREACHED FROM 1840-1844

(The Fall of the Ottoman Empire)
(Part 2)
Dr. Josiah Litch Predicts the Fall of the Ottoman Empire: BY: Loughborough:
In 1838 Dr. Josiah Litch, of Philadelphia, Pa., having embraced the truth set forth by William Miller, united in the
work of giving greater publicity to the message. He prepared articles for the public print on the subject of the seven
trumpets of the Revelation. He took the unqualified position that the sixth trumpet would cease to sound and the
Ottoman power fall on the 11th day of August, 1840, and that that would demonstrate to the world that a day in
symbolic prophecy represents a year of literal time. {1905 JNL, GSAM 129.2}
Some of the brethren, even those who believed with him on this point, trembled with fear for the result "if it
should not come to pass" as he said. This did not, however, daunt him, but he went forward to do all in his power to
give publicity to his views on the Turkish question. Public journals spread abroad the claim he had made on the
subject. Infidel clubs discussed the question in their meetings, and said, "Here is a man that ventures something, and
if this matter comes out as he says, it will establish his claim without a doubt that a day in prophecy symbolizes a
year, and that twenty-three hundred days is so many years, and that they will terminate in 1844." {1905 JNL, GSAM
129.3} .NOW THE QUESTION WAS: Is Josiah Right?
The publication of Dr. Litch's lecture made a general stir, and many thousands were thus called to watch for the
termination of the difficulties that had sprung up between Mehemet Ali, the pasha of Egypt, and the Turkish sultan.
Hundreds said, "If this affair terminates as the doctor has asserted, it will establish the 'year-day' principle of
interpreting symbolic time, and we will be Adventists." {1905 JNL, GSAM 130.1}

The Turkish Sultan at War with the Pasha of Egypt:

For several years previous to 1840, the sultan had been embroiled in a war with Mehemet Ali, pasha of Egypt. In
1838 the trouble between the sultan and his Egyptian vassal was for the time being restrained by the influence of the
foreign embassadors. In 1839, however, hostilities were again begun, and were prosecuted until, in a general battle
between the armies of the sultan and Mehemet, the sultan's army was entirely cut up and destroyed, and his fleet
taken by Mehemet and carried into Egypt. So completely had the sultan been reduced, that, when the war again
began in August, he had only two first-rates and three frigates as the sad remains of the once powerful Turkish fleet.
This fleet Mehemet positively refused to give up and return to the sultan, and declared that if the powers attempted
to take it from him, he would burn it. In this posture affairs stood, when, in 1840, England, Russia, Austria, and Prussia
interposed, and determined on a settlement of the difficulty; for it was evident that if let alone, Mehemet would soon
become master of the sultan's throne. {1905 JNL, GSAM 130.2}
***At this time, England, Russia, Austria, and Prussia were all Christian Nations***

Intervention of the Allied Powers:

"The sultan accepted this intervention of the allied powers, and thus made a voluntary surrender of the question
into their hands(see GC1911 334.4-335.1). A conference of these powers was held in London, the sheik, Effendi Bey
Likgis, being present as Ottoman plenipotentiary. An ultimatum was drawn up, to be presented to the pasha of Egypt,
whereby the sultan was to offer him the hereditary government of Egypt, and all that part of Syria extending from the
Gulf of Suez to the Lake of Tiberias, together with the province of Acre, for life; he, on his part, to evacuate all other
parts of the sultan's dominions then occupied by him and to return the Ottoman fleet. In case he refused this offer from
the sultan, the four powers were to take the matter into their own hands, and use such other means to bring him to
terms as they should see fit. {1905 JNL, GSAM 131.1}
"It was apparent that just as soon as this ultimatum should be put into the hands of Mehemet Ali, the matter
would forever be beyond the control of the former [the sultan], and the disposal of his affairs would, from that
moment, be in the hands of the foreign powers(which are the Christian Nations). {1905 JNL, GSAM 131.2}

***continue on next page***

The Prophecy Fulfilled-End of Turkish Independence:

"The sultan dispatched Rifat Bey on a government steamer to Alexandria, to communicate the ultimatum to the
pasha. It was put into his hands, and by him taken in charge, on the eleventh day of August, 1840! On the same day a
note was addressed by the sultan to the embassadors of the four powers, inquiring what plan was to be adopted in case
the pasha should refuse to comply with the terms of the ultimatum; to which they made answer that provision had been
made, and there was no necessity of his alarming himself about any contingency that might arise. This day the period of
three hundred ninety-one years and fifteen days allotted to the continuance of the Ottoman power ended; and where
was the sultan's independence?- Gone!" 6 {1905 JNL, GSAM 131.3}
From that day to this the sultan has had to move under the dictation of the powers, and watch the
dismemberment of his kingdom, as slice by slice it has been appropriated to their own use. {1905 JNL, GSAM 132.1}

Public Interest in Prophecy Aroused:

This striking fulfillment of the prophecy had a tremendous effect upon the public mind. It intensified the interest of
the people to hear upon the subject of fulfilled and fulfilling prophecy. Dr. Litch said that within a few months after
August 11, 1840, he had received letters from more than one thousand prominent infidels, some of them leaders of
infidel clubs, in which they stated that they had given up the battle against the Bible, and had accepted it as God's
revelation to man. Some of these were fully converted to God, and a number of them became able speakers in the
Great Second Advent Movement. Some expressed themselves to Dr. Litch on this wise: "We have said that expositors
of prophecy quote from the musty pages of history to substantiate their claims of prophetic fulfillments; but in this
case we have the living facts right before our eyes." {1905 JNL, GSAM 132.2}
To illustrate how, just at the close of the sixth trumpet, the advent message began to go "with a loud voice," I will
note a case as related to me by one of the actors in this message. {1905 JNL, GSAM 132.3}
In the year 1840, E. C. Williams, an extensive tent and sail maker, of Rochester, N.Y., accepted the message, and
invited Elders Miller and Himes to come to Rochester and speak to the thousands of that city. They replied that they
lacked the money necessary to secure a hall of sufficient size to accommodate the people. He replied, "I have a circular
tent 120 feet in diameter. I will pitch it, seat it, and care for it, free. Come on and proclaim the message." "They
came," he said to me, "and the tent did not half hold those who came to hear, so I put in a forty-foot splice, making a
tent 160 x 120 feet in size. This tent was filled with people daily, and hundreds crowded near on the outside, all eager
to hear the word." {1905 JNL, GSAM 132.4}
***This is going to happen with thousands of infidels coming into the truth when Sunday is enforced

Hundreds Proclaiming the Message:

To meet the growing interest, large tents were used, and grove meetings were held in the summer season. Some of
the largest church buildings and public halls were used in the winter, and all were packed to their utmost capacity
with interested listeners. Instead of Elder Miller now standing, as he had previous to 1840, "almost alone" in declaring
the message, about three hundred joined him in publicly proclaiming the termination of the twenty-three-hundredday period, and in giving the cry, "There shall be time no longer," and, "The hour of his judgment is come." Thus we
see how, when the Lord's time came for the message to make its world-wide advancement, his word was fulfilled,
and the millions were moved with a desire to hear the call. {1905 JNL, GSAM 133.1}
What was true of the movement in America was true in other countries. From the year 1840, instead of a few
individuals scattering their publications, scores sprang, as it were, to the front to proclaim the cry. In England there
were seven hundred ministers of the Church of England alone proclaiming the message, to say nought of the scores of
others engaged in the same work. In more than a score of the different leading nations of the earth a message was
going with that zeal which led the looker-on to say, "This people are terribly in earnest." {1905 JNL, GSAM 133.2}

The three last trumpets are each attended with a wo to the inhabiters of the earth. The fifth trumpet is the first
wo; the sixth trumpet the second wo; the seventh and last trumpet the third wo. {1842 JoL, PREX2 161.2}
26th hit.scroll up to pg. 150
"The fifth angel sounded, and a star fell from heaven unto the earth." A star is a fallen minister. The sounding of
this trumpet took place about A. D. 606, when the Mahommedan imposture took its rise. This imposture was more the
work of a Jew, whom he met in his Syrian journeys, and a Nestorian monk who had been expelled from his cloister, than
the work of Mahommed himself. His system is a confused medley of Judaism, Christianity, and heathenism. The exiled
monk was probably the principal agent in the work of forming this imposture, and might with propriety or without
violence to the figure, be denominated a fallen star. The key of the bottomless pit was given him, and he opened the
pit, and there arose a great smoke out of the pit, and the sun (the Gospel,) and the air (the moral influence of the
Gospel,) were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came locusts out of the smoke upon the earth.
Smoke denotes errors, and locusts destructive armies. Mahommed, after he and his accomplices had framed their
system, began at first to propagate his religion by peaceable means. But not succeeding to his mind, he soon began to
meditate more violent measures, and to do by the sword what he could not do by argument. They, (the armies of
Mahommed) had power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They tormented men by their sudden attacks, and
the wounds and tortures which they inflicted. It was commanded that they should not hurt the grass of the earth,
neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men who had not the seal of God in their foreheads. Tree,
grass and green thing are here used in opposition to those men who have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
These expressions must therefore mean those who have the seal of God in their foreheads. Says Smith's Key to
Revelation, "Among the torments inflicted by these Mahommedan powers upon the conquered, were the following:
Infidels, who rejected the Christian religion, and also all idolaters, they forced to receive the Mahommedan religion,
upon pain of death. But Jews and Christians, having their Bibles and their religion, they left to the enjoyment of them,
upon their paying large sums, which they exacted. But where the payment of such sums was refused, they must either
embrace the new religion, or die. But the only alternative, for the heathen was, to embrace Mahommedanism, or die.
It was commanded them, that they should not hurt the grass or trees or any green thing, meaning the people of God,
or Christians, but should let them alone for tribute. {1838 JoL, PSC 150.1}
This scene changes in the fifth verse, and power is given them to torment, but not to kill the men who had not the
seal of God in their foreheads, for five months. To kill, is to conquer, in figurative language; and to torment, is to
harass by sudden excursions and assaults. Five prophetic months are one hundred and fifty years, there being thirty
days in a Jewish month. This change in the power of the locusts, when it was given them to torment men for five
months, is noticed in the tenth and eleventh verses. It was at the time when they had a king over them whose name
is, in Hebrew, Abaddon, but in Greek, Apollyon, which signifies destroyer. For near seven hundred years the
Mahommedans were divided into several factions. About the close of the thirteenth century, a powerful leader arose
by the name of Othman, and united the contending parties under one government, which is still known by the name
of the Ottoman empire. This was the first government, since the death of Mahommed, under which his followers
were united. and as the name Apollyon signifies, great has been the destruction of human life under this government.
But to return to the description of these warriors. Their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a
man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it, and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from
them. Says a noted author, "Their military laws adjudged such a portion of their captives to bondage; and the
condition of these, particularly of the women, was so deplorable (being in the power of the most licentious men,) that
many would prefer death to their condition." Their treatment of their enemies "was the most stinging that could well
be imagined. The appearance of the locusts we will note. "The shape of the locusts were like unto horses prepared
unto battle." The Turkish armies were principally horsemen. Probably more generally so than any other army which
ever existed. "And on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces as the face of a man." The horses
were each mounted by a man who wore on his head a yellow turban. "They had hair like the hair of women." They
wore their hair long like women, and gave it different twists and dresses, to distinguish different bands of soldiery.
They fought with javelins like the teeth of lions. "They had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound
of their wings were as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle." Their breastplates were shields which
the Turks carried with them in battle. It is said, that when they charged an enemy, they made a noise on them like the
noise of chariot wheels. "They had tails like the tails of scorpions." Each Turkish horseman had a scimeter hung at his
wrist, with which they were so expert, as that, when engaged in close combat, they would sever a man's or even a
horse's head at a blow. {1838 JoL, PSC 151.1}
***continue on next page***

It was given them after the rise of the Ottoman empire, to torment or harass and weaken men (the Roman empire
in the east) five months. If these are prophetic months as is probable, it would be one hundred and fifty years. But
when did that empire rise? Mr. Miller has fixed on A. D. 1298. Others, among whom is Gibbon, in his Decline and Fall
of the Roman Empire, 1299. He says-Othman first invaded the territory of Nicomedia on the 27th of July, 1299. He
also remarks on the singular accuracy of the date, a circumstance not often found in the history of those times. He
says-"The singular accuracy with which this even, is given, seems to indicate some foresight of the rapid growth of the
monster." {1838 JoL, PSC 153.1}
If we date the origin of this empire in 1299, the hundred and fifty years would end 1449. During that length of time,
the eastern empire of Rome was harassed beyond measure by the Ottoman power, but was not subjected entirely to
it. The year 1448, Amurath the Turkish sultan, besieged Coria, one of the strongest cities in the Roman empire. The
end of the five months would come the next year. We should naturally look for some great defeat of the Christian
emperor's army. But was it so? So far from it, that after a long summer's siege and a great loss of men, the fall coming
on and rains setting in, the Turks raised the siege and retired. The empire was now left in peace. One would be almost
inclined to think the word of prophecy must now fail. {1838 JoL, PSC 154.1}
But the time came, and the word of God was confirmed by the event. "John Paleologus emperor of Constantinople,
was dead, and his brother, Constantine Deacozes, would not venture to ascend the throne without the permission of
Amurath, the Turkish sultan. He sent ambassadors to ask his consent before he presumed to call himself sovereign.
This happened A. D. 1449. This shameful proceeding seemed to presage the approaching downfall of the empire.
Ducas, the historian, counts John Paleologus for the last Greek emperor, without doubt, because he did not consider
as such, a prince who had not dared to reign without the permission of his enemy." Hawkins' Otto. Emp. p. 113.
Gibbon, an infidel, is so struck with the singular accuracy of the record of the origin of this empire, that he attributes
it to some foresight in the historian, of the rapid growth of the monster. But would it not become Christians better, to
attribute it to the superintending providence of that Being who had set a bound for that and other empires, which
they may not pass? who had given them power to harass and torment the empire of Constantinople five months; and
to kill or subject it to their own sway, an hour, a day, a month, and a year; the whole being five hundred and forty-one
years and fifteen days. {1838 JoL, PSC 154.2}
The sixth trumpet sounded; and a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, said to the
sixth angel which had the trumpet-"Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates." And the four
angels were loosed which were prepared for an hour, a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of
men. The four angels denote ministers of judgment. They refer to the four nations of the Seljukan Turks of which the
Ottoman empire was composed, located near the river Euphrates, at Aleppo, Iconium, Damascus and Bagdad. Up to
the period of 1449, they had indeed tormented the Christian empire(Referring to the Roman Church), but could not
subject it. When the sixth trumpet sounded, God seems to have overawed the Greek emperor, and all power of
independence seems, as in a moment, to have fled. He, in the most strange and unaccountable manner, voluntarily
acknowledged that he reigned by the permission of the Turkish sultan. The Turks very soon after this addressed
themselves to the work of reducing Constantinople. This they effected, A. D. 1453, four years after the emperor
obtained permission to ascend the throne. The last third of the ancient Roman empire was now reduced by Turkish
arms. The number of horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand; what this number means, expositors have
been at a loss to determine. But I am inclined to believe with Mr. Miller, that it means two hundred thousand twice
told, making four hundred thousand in all. What makes this probable, is the fact, that the Turks usually had from
three to four hundred thousand horsemen in their army. They had, when Constantinople was taken, three hundred
thousand, and some say four hundred thousand horsemen, beside many foot, and a fleet. {1838 JoL, PSC 155.1}
Since the fifth trumpet sounded, there has been an astonishing change in the arms of the Turks. They then had
breastplates of iron, and were armed with dirks and scimeters. Now the scene is changed, and they are prepared with
breastplates of fire, and of jacinth and brimstone. And out of the mouths of the horses, proceeded fire, and smoke,
and brimstone. Their power was in their mouth and tail; their tails were like serpents; long, cylindrical instruments
like serpents with heads in them, (bullets) with which they did hurt. This description has long been considered by
expositors as a description of fire arms and gunpowder. And, indeed, I do not know how any one who knew nothing
of such instruments, could describe them more clearly. The design of these plagues is stated in the twentieth verse. It
was to lead the people on whom these plagues were inflicted, to repent of their sins and break them of devil worship,
etc. But they did not repent, neither of their murders, nor their sorceries, nor fornications, nor of their thefts. They,
like most on whom the judgments of God fall, remain impenitent to this day; and the Turks continue to oppress them.

But when will this power be overthrown? According to the calculations already made, that the five months ended
1449, the hour, fifteen days, the day, one year, the month, thirty years, and the year, three hundred and sixty years;
in all, three hundred and ninety-one years and fifteen days, will end in A. D. 1840, some time in the month of August.
The prophecy is the most remarkable and definite, (even descending to the days) of any in the Bible, relating to these
great events. It is as singular as the record of the time when the empire rose. The facts are now before the reader, and
he must make what disposition of them he thinks best. The sixth woe yet continues, and will till the great river
Euphrates is dried up, and the seventh trumpet sounds. {1838 JoL, PSC 157.1}
Chapter x. We are here presented with new scenes. A mighty angel from heaven, clothed with a cloud; and a
rainbow on his head, and his face shining as the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire. In his hand was a little book open;
he set his right foot on the sea and his left on the land, and cried as when a lion roareth. Seven thunders then uttered
their voices, and John was about to write. But a voice from heaven said-"Seal up those things which the seven
thunders uttered, and write them not." "And the angel which I saw stand on the sea and upon the earth lifted up his
hand to heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven and the things that these are
therein, and the earth and the things that therein are, and the sea and the things which are therein, that there should
be time no longer. But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God
should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets." {1838 JoL, PSC 158.1}
There shall be time no longer. This scene is to take place immediately after the end of the three hundred and
ninety-one years and fifteen days, or the drying up of the great river Euphrates. There shall be no more season of
mercy; for in the days of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God shall be finished. The
great mystery of salvation by faith shall be ended, and the year of his redeemed will come. {1838 JoL, PSC 158.2}
JOSIAH LITCH IS NOW QUOTING REVELATION 10:1-4
WHAT ARE THESE SEVEN THUNDERS THAT GOD TOLD JOHN TO SEAL UP, THAT JOSIAH LITCH IS REFERRING TO HERE IN
REVELATION?
After these seven thunders uttered their voices, the injunction comes to John as to Daniel in regard to the little book:
"Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered." These relate to future events which will be disclosed in their
order. Daniel shall stand in his lot at the end of the days. John sees the little book unsealed. Then Daniel's prophecies
have their proper place in the first, second, and third angels' messages to be given to the world. The unsealing of the
little book was the message in relation to time. {7BC 971.4}
The books of Daniel and the Revelation are one. One is a prophecy, the other a revelation; one a book sealed, the
other a book opened. John heard the mysteries which the thunders uttered, but he was commanded not to write them.
{7BC 971.5}
The special light given to John which was expressed in the seven thunders was a delineation of events which would
transpire under the first and second angels' messages. It was not best for the people to know these things, for their faith
must necessarily be tested. In the order of God most wonderful and advanced truths would be proclaimed. The first and
second angels' messages were to be proclaimed, but no further light was to be revealed before these messages had
done their specific work. This is represented by the angel standing with one foot on the sea, proclaiming with a most
solemn oath that time should be no longer. {7BC 971.6}
