The21stcenturyhasbeenwidelyconsideredastheinformationeraandthepenetrationofnewscienceandtechnol
ogyintomoderndwellingsisunconsciouslybecomingmoreandmorerapid.Thereexistsmoreandmorenetworka
ppliancesinthedomesticenvironment,suchassmartlightbulbs,smartrefrigeratorsandsmartairconditioners.Me
anwhile,withthecontinuousgrowthoftheeconomy,theresidentsareincreasinglypursuingthehighqualityoflife.
Therefore,thedemandthatwetakefulladvantageofhouseholdappliances,inconjunctionwithcustomizedsoftwar
eandhardware,tocreateasmartenvironmentisparticularlyurgent.Intermsofthetechnologyperspective,smarth
omeisanaturalextensionofcurrentelectronic,informationandcommunicationtechnologies.Visionsofsmarthom
eshavelongattractedtheattentionofresearchersinindustryandacademiaandconsiderabletimeandenergyhas
beenputtowardenablinghomeautomationinrecentyears.Gradually,smarthomehasbecomethecurrenttrendof
thetechnologydevelopment.Althoughsmarthometechnologiesareemerging,theyhavenotbeenwidelyadopted

becauseofthedifficultiesencounteredinreality.Thesebarriersarehighcost,inflexiblemanageability,andpoorse
curity,respectively.Thusthisdissertationdesignsandimplementsamiddlewarearchitecturesolutiontoovercomet
hemforthesmarthomesystem.Firstly,wedevisethewholesmarthometopologyelaboratelyandintroducetherela
tedtechnologiesindetail.Secondly,wemakeanefforttodesignanddevelopasecureversatilesmarthomegatew

aybasedontheembeddedsystemasamiddlewaresolutiontoworkouttheheterogeneousnetwork.Themiddlewa
recancreateacommonplatformtoexchangeinformationbetweenvarietiesofnetworkdevices.Inaddition,thesma
rtresidentialgatewaycouldbedeployedtominimizeinitialinvestmentsandinparalleluseauthenticationandautho
rizationmechanismtoprovidesufficientreliabilityandsecurityevenforthecriticalapplications.Thirdly,wedesignth
eoverallarchitectureofthesmarthomeandestablishtheaggregationsystemmodelforthecommunicationbetwee
nthesmartdevicesandthehomegateway.ThenweadopttheSOAcomponentprogrammingmodelbasedonOSG
iframeworktodevelopvarietiesofbundlesandimplementthesmartLEDlightingcontrolsystem.Finally,wedesign
andrealizetheuserfriendlyUI,whichcanrunonmobiledevicesorwithinanywebbrowser,basedontheBrowse
r/Serverarchitecturetoverifyandtesttheavailabilityofthewholecreatedsystem.Theactualresultsshowthatthew
holedesignedsystempossessesgoodfeasibility,highreliability,flexiblemanagementandeasyintegrationofvario
usnetworkdevices.Moreover,ithaslowcost,lowpowerconsumptionandstrongstabilityaswell.Atthesametime,
thesmarthomesystemcanrealizeautomaticmonitoringandintelligentcontroltothedigitaldevicesandsmartappli
anceslocallyorremotely.Furthermore,theaccesstechnologycouldbeabletoprovidesufficientqualityofservicea
ndguaranteesufficientlevelofnetworksecurityinoptimalway.Inaword,theresearchofthisdissertationhasachie
vedthedesiredgoals.
