L-1-2: This subcategory is about stages of growth and development of

pediatric client.
My knowledge on principles and theories of growth and
development that was initially acquired from Fundamentals of
Nursing was further supplemented through reading the recommended
textbook: Maternal and Child Health Nursing: Care of the
Childbearing and Childrearing Family (2014) by Adele Pillitteri. The
textbook information I gained are focused on pediatric clients.
Moreover, the PowerPoint presentation for the course along with the
instructors notes are simplified and informative specially on how to
integrate theories of growth and development to support the nursing
knowledge required to meet the needs of pediatric clients and their
families.

According to Potter and Perry (2009) growth and development

is a synchronous process that are interdependent in a healthy
individual. Growth is quantitative changes like size and length while
development is qualitative like skills and character.

Principles of growth and development have a predictable

characteristic. It follows a process from simple to complex, head to toe
and gross to fine. In addition, developmental stage depends on the
childs ability to achieve milestones, not on physical age. Also, not all
children develop at the same rate and some tasks may be missed or
passed by quickly.
Furthermore, there are different developmental theories and
each theory emphasizes different developmental task that needs to be
achieve. First is Piagets theory of cognitive development which
focuses on reasoning and thinking process. The stages are:
Sensorimotor during infancy, Preoperational for toddlers/preschooler,
Concrete Operational for school-age children and Formal Operational
for adolescents. Second, Kohlberg theory describes the development
of moral reasoning. It is the ability of a person to distinguish right and
wrong. It has 3 levels and each level is subdivided in 2 stages: Preconventional Morality in toddlers (Obedience and punishment and
Individualism and exchange), Conventional Morality for preschoolers

and school-age (Good interpersonal relationships and Maintaining the
social order) and Post-conventional Morality in adolescents (Social
contract and individual rights and Universal principles). Lastly, is
Eriksons 8 stages of Life. In pediatric nursing we only discus the first
5 stages. It is a psychoanalytic and psychosocial theory characterized
by conflicts that must be resolved to move to the next stage. It
inludes: Infancy (trust vs. mistrust), Toddler (autonomy vs. shame or
doubt), Preschooler (initiative vs. guilt), School-age (industry vs.
inferiority) and Adolescence (identity vs. role confusion).
As a nursing student it is important to know and understands
that each age group (infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age child, and
adolescent) have specific characteristics and needs in terms of
physical growth, developmental milestone, play, safety and nutrition.
Having knowledge in stages of emotional, cognitive, moral and
developments is essential in planning an effective nursing care
required for pediatric patient.

I consider myself Good in terms of proficiency in pediatric

nursing under stages and principles of growth and development. With
the aid of reading books specific to pediatric patients, I understand the
different theories and principles revolving around to growth and
development. Using self-assessment, reflection and critical thinking I
was able to utilize the knowledge well in scenarios and nursing care.
In my future clinical practice as a student nurse, I will promote
positive impact on my patient by applying the knowledge that I
learned. I will communicate therapeutically while considering their
developmental stages. I will create nursing care plans and health
teachings specific to the physical growth, developmental milestone,
play, safety needs and nutritional needs of my patient. I will promote
healthy growth and development of infant, toddler, preschooler,
school-age child, and adolescent. Along with, integrating theories of
growth and development to support the nursing knowledge required to
meet the needs of pediatric clients and their families.
