Thoughts from Marie

I love the movie Eat Pray Love starring Julia

Roberts. In the movie, Julia Robertss
character is learning Italian. Her Italian
teacher gives her a good piece of advice: You
must be polite to yourself while learning a
new language. In other words, be patient!

Classroom
Expectations

Attendance and
Participation

Students must come to class on time,

prepared, and ready to participate. I
promise this class will not be boring if
you participate actively.

Come to class! You will get full

participation and attendance
credit each day if you:

Each day that you come to class

you receive 100 points. If you miss
a class then you lose 100 points.
Your points for coming to class can
be reduced if you disrupt the class
by text messaging, using your
phone, talking that disrupts the
learning process, not bringing your
book, sleeping in class, or being
more than 10 minutes late to class
3 times. 3 times late = 1 absence =
no attendance and participation
points for 1 day. If you miss more
than half the class you will be
marked absent. If you miss more
than 3 classes you may be dropped.
If you miss 2 or more classes you
may not be successful!

come to class on time

always bring your book (books
with answers will not be accepted)
always complete all homework
and assignments on time
participate actively in group and
pair work as well as help others
share your ideas in class
remain in class the whole period
volunteer to do exercises or read
aloud
are not sleeping in class
Have your cell phone (s) OFF (not
VIBRATE) and tucked away,
except for authorized activities
do not answer phone calls during
class
are prepared to present when it
is your turn
speak English only

For every offense per day, your

participation grade may be
reduced by 25%. For example if
you have 2 offenses in 1 day you
will receive 50 out of 100 points.
Students will be given one verbal
warning for use of their native
language or any unauthorized use
of cell phones in class. Students
who continue to engage in these
behaviors will receive a deduction
in their class participation for that
particular day. Or may be asked to
leave the classroom.

This class is PASS or NO PASS only. A grade of 70% or higher will

PASS. Reviewing your notes and assignments BEFORE each class is
EXTEREMELY IMPORTANT as well as practicing for any tests and quizzes BEFORE class. I will try and update
grades on Canvas each week and will leave detailed comments and suggestions on your homework and
assignment submissions. If you have any questions about your grade, dont hesitate to ask! I am ALWAYS
available TO HELP YOU.

ESL 20

Academic Integrity
I have zero tolerance for cheating. If you are caught cheating, you will fail the assignment.
Plagiarism is another word for academic dishonesty and is a form of theft. All of the writing and
the ideas in your papers, discussions, and assignments must be your own or must be attributed
to their sources.

Additional Course Expectations

Assignments and Homework:

Students will be given regular assignments and homework to help
assist with their learning. I will always provide time in class to get
started on big assignment. Late homework is NEVER ACCEPTED
under ANY CONDITIONS without a LATE HOMEWORK PASS.
You have 2 LATE HOMEWORK PASSES per semester. They can be
used for any homework. They CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY IN-
CLASS QUIZZES, TESTS, OR PRESENTATIONS.

I love cooking sushi dinners

for my friends and family! I
made this sushi!

You must complete the late homework pass and give it to me THE
NEXT CLASS PERIOD for credit. If the assignment as due on
Monday then you must give me the pass on Wednesday for credit.

Quizzes, In-class
Presentations/Discussions, and
Extra Credit:

1Have you been on the

Coaster to see the beautiful
views of San Diego or take a
trip to Los Angeles?

There may be regular quizzes to see if you are paying attention during at
home assignments and in-class activities. Pay attention to your classmates
while they are speaking and put your best effort forth during at home
activities. If you miss a presentation, test, discussion, or quiz because you
are absent you cannot make it up. I may provide extra chances to improve
your score on each quiz or test. I may also allow you to revise assignments
for additional points. Extra Credit: An opportunity to earn extra credit (or
opportunities), while at the same time gaining extra practice to improve
your English skills, may be available. This extra credit opportunity will be
explained during class.

What happens if you

use a cell phone in
this class?

Major Course Assignments

Flipped speaking activities (Voice Assignments) (15%)
As part of your classwork you will also complete out of class speaking exercises via
Canvas. About 10 of these activities will be assigned throughout the course

Quizzes (10%)
5 or more quizzes will be given over the course of the semester covering various topics,
listenings, or readings discussed in class. Some quizzes will be online through Canvas
and must be completed prior to the deadline and some will be given in class. It is your
responsibility to make sure you remember to do online quizzes on time.

Midterm Exam (5%)
1 academic midterm exam will be given in the semester which will follow from several
similar listening, speaking, and pronunciation activities you will do in class. The test is
not a major part of your grade, but is important in assessing skills you have learned in
this class.

Online Presentation (10%)
1 online presentation will be given using Canvas. You will receive full credit for teaching
the class about one group of minimal pairs including: mouth and tongue location,
creating cards, following Maries model presentation, responding to 2 classmates
presentations by practicing their pronunciation lesson.

In-class Presentation (20%)
You will give 1 in-class individual presentation for 4-5 minutes with a Q&A section. The
presentation will be on an advertisement of your choice (print or video) and you will
explain your opinion of the ad through the advertising techniques we discussed in class.
You will also be assessed on your presentation skills learned and practiced in class.

Graded Discussion (20%)
You will participate in at least one graded discussion this semester. Your abilities and
skill at contributing to a group discussion on a relevant topic (most likely crime) will be
discussed, as well as the depth of and substance of your contributions.

Podcast (20%)
With a partner, you will create a podcast that tells the story of a movie using the story
telling skills we learned in class. This podcast should be considered the Final Exam for
this course. Your podcast should include an introduction, the story, and a response to
the film. Pronunciation and speaking skills like tone and intonation will be assessed.
